In a landmark development for public healthcare in India, the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU) in Varanasi has successfully conducted the nation's first robotic-assisted knee surgery at a government medical institution. This historic procedure was performed on a 74-year-old patient from Bihar, utilizing the newly inaugurated Robotic-Assisted Knee Surgical System at the university's Trauma Centre.
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Surgical Precision
The robotic platform represents a significant technological leap in orthopaedic care. According to officials, this non-CT-based system offers substantial benefits over traditional methods. It enables surgeons to achieve unparalleled precision during knee replacement procedures, allowing for personalized alignment tailored to each patient's unique anatomy. Expanding Access to Specialized Trauma Orthopaedics
The launch of this facility is poised to transform trauma orthopaedic care in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Previously, patients requiring such advanced procedures often had to travel to private hospitals or metropolitan cities, incurring significant expenses and logistical challenges. Notably, the centre will provide robotic-assisted knee surgeries to patients covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme without any additional charges, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder access to this life-changing technology.
Inauguration and Corporate Social Responsibility Support
The Robotic-Assisted Knee Surgical System was formally inaugurated at IMS BHU's Trauma Centre by Banaras Hindu University Vice-Chancellor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi and Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam. The acquisition of this advanced technology was made possible through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
The surgical team, led by Trauma Centre Professor Saurabh Singh and including orthopaedic surgeons Kumar Prashant, Alok Rai, Vamiki Ansari, Abhijit Kunwar, Kavita, and Reena, credited Vice-Chancellor Chaturvedi for securing the crucial ONGC funding that brought this vision to reality.
Comprehensive Impact and Future Initiatives
The CSR support extends beyond the initial installation, encompassing robotic consumables for 100 economically vulnerable patients. This provision will enable these individuals to undergo robotic-assisted trauma orthopaedic knee surgery at highly subsidized rates, further democratizing access to advanced medical care.
In addition to clinical services, IMS BHU plans to establish a skill development centre in robotic surgery for orthopaedic surgeons across India. This initiative aims to build national capacity in this specialized field, ensuring that more medical professionals can leverage robotic technology to benefit patients throughout the country.
