Twin Narmada Canal Tragedies Claim Four Lives in Gandhinagar District
In a devastating series of events, four men lost their lives in two separate drowning incidents within a 24-hour period in the Narmada canal located in Gandhinagar district. The tragedies, which occurred on Sunday, have left local communities in shock as authorities continue their search efforts for two of the victims.
First Incident: Cousins Swept Away Near Valad
The initial tragedy unfolded near Valad, situated between Limbdiya and Karai. Cousins Sunil Ambaliya and Roshan Ambaliya, both natives of Dholera who were residing in Ahmedabad, had traveled to the canal on a two-wheeler. According to police reports, Sunil accidentally slipped into the water while washing his hands and feet. Witnessing his struggle, Roshan immediately jumped into the canal in a brave but ill-fated attempt to rescue him. Both men were swiftly carried away by the powerful current of the canal.
Fire and emergency services promptly launched an extensive search operation in the area. Their efforts led to the recovery of Sunil's body, but Roshan remains missing. Rescue teams are continuing their diligent efforts to locate him, highlighting the challenging conditions of the waterway.
Second Incident: Brothers Drown After Domestic Dispute
In a separate but equally heartbreaking incident near Raipur on the Dehgam-Naroda Road, brothers Nikhil Vaghela and Neeraj Vaghela, residents of Naroda, met a similar fate. The brothers had reportedly come to the canal following a dispute at their home. In a tragic turn of events, Nikhil allegedly jumped into the canal, with Neeraj following him in an attempt to save his brother. Both were overwhelmed by the strong current and swept away.
Search operations resulted in the discovery of Nikhil's body in the canal near Medra village. However, Neeraj has not yet been found, and authorities are actively continuing the search, underscoring the urgency and difficulty of the situation.
Police Investigation and Official Response
Both incidents have been officially registered at the Dabhoda police station as cases of accidental death. Police officials have emphasized the dangers of the Narmada canal, particularly its strong currents, which pose significant risks to anyone entering the water. The investigations are ongoing, with authorities working to gather more details about the circumstances leading to these tragedies.
Local communities and emergency responders are urging heightened awareness about water safety, especially in areas with fast-flowing canals like the Narmada. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the perils associated with such waterways, even during seemingly routine activities.
The search for the missing victims, Roshan Ambaliya and Neeraj Vaghela, remains a top priority for rescue teams, who are employing all available resources to bring closure to the grieving families. The back-to-back nature of these drownings has prompted calls for increased safety measures and public education campaigns to prevent future tragedies in the region.
