DMK Confronts 'Double-Engine' Electoral Challenge in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar
The Thiru Vi Ka Nagar assembly constituency in Chennai has emerged as a critical political battleground, where the ruling DMK is facing what local observers term a 'double-engine' referendum. This refers to the dual representation the area has enjoyed, with Thayagam Kavi alias P Sivakumar serving as the assembly representative and R Priya holding the mayoral position in the Greater Chennai Corporation. The electoral contest here is intensifying, with multiple factors converging to create a complex political landscape.
A Multi-Cornered Contest with Deep-Rooted Narratives
Challenging the DMK's dominance is AIADMK candidate Porkodi Armstrong, who is strategically working on caste consolidation while invoking the emotional memory of her husband's murder. Her campaign emphasizes a narrative of sacrifice and service, with her political secretary, A Muthukrishnan, asserting that she represents strong ideological foundations and could become the next significant woman leader from the Dalit community after Satyavaani Muthu.
Adding to the political fray are TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna, who has raised allegations of a '430-crore toilet privatisation scam in the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone, alongside TVK candidate M R Pallavi and NTK's Jagadesh Chander. The constituency's proximity to Perambur, where popular TVK leader Vijay is contesting, is expected to influence vote-splitting dynamics, further complicating the electoral arithmetic.
DMK's Steady Candidate: K S Ravichandran
Amidst this political din, DMK candidate K S Ravichandran maintains a steady campaign presence. A seasoned advocate with experience in high-stakes electoral battles, Ravichandran is no stranger to intense political competition. His dedication is evident as he campaigns tirelessly, even switching from shoes to slippers due to swelling in his feet from extensive walking.
Ravichandran brings a proven track record, having defeated former minister and five-time Egmore MLA Parithi Ilamvazhuthi by more than 10,000 votes in the 2016 elections. Though a new face in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, he has cultivated an approachable image, frequently interacting with the public at tea shops and addressing constituents as 'brother' to foster personal connections.
Development Versus Caste Calculations
The candidate emphasizes development over caste politics, pointing to initiatives like the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam, which began in 2023 and is now valued at over '6,500 crore. 'What has DMK not done for the constituency?' Ravichandran questions, arguing that while Thiru Vi Ka Nagar is a reserved seat, the community has progressed beyond narrow caste-based electoral calculations.
Senior DMK functionary R Rajan, father of Mayor Priya, highlights concrete development achievements, including the renovation of the Perambur bus terminus, construction of the Ambedkar marriage hall, installation of sports turfs, women's gyms, and newly renovated parks—all funded through the mayor's allocation. 'We are carrying out a development-based outreach,' Rajan asserts, framing the DMK's approach as fundamentally progressive and inclusive.
Complex Social Fabric and Political Maneuvering
Thiru Vi Ka Nagar's demographic composition adds layers to the political contest. While there are substantial Scheduled Caste population clusters in areas like Pulianthope, Pattalam, and Otteri, the constituency also encompasses urban, middle-class pockets in Perambur, Purasawakkam, Ayanavaram, and Kelly's. These neighborhoods feature gated communities and diverse populations, including Hindi-speaking groups such as Jains and migrants, making caste equations alone insufficient to secure victory.
The DMK has strategically strengthened its organizational presence in the constituency since its formation with 1.78 lakh voters. After the AIADMK's initial win in 2011, the DMK elevated local cadre, appointing P K Sekarbabu as HR&CE minister in 2021 and reserving the mayoral post for SC women, which went to Priya. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has criticized this move, labeling Priya a 'bommai' (toy) mayor and arguing that Chennai requires stronger leadership. Sekarbabu has countered, accusing EPS of using unparliamentary language that defames a Dalit woman and the mayor's office.
Broader Political Endorsements and Campaign Themes
Porkodi Armstrong's campaign receives moral support from VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and TVK's Aadhav Arjuna, while youngsters from families her husband helped are actively mobilizing at the grassroots level. During a campaign visit, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss called for unity among working-class communities, including Dalits, Vanniyars, and Yadavars, to achieve social justice—a theme resonating across the constituency.
As Thiru Vi Ka Nagar prepares for polling, the election transcends simple political binaries, embodying a referendum on governance models, developmental accountability, and the evolving role of caste in Tamil Nadu's urban political landscape. With high-profile allegations, emotional narratives, and substantial development claims, voters face a decisive choice that could signal broader political trends in the state.
