DMK's Cartigueyane Wins Nellithope by 850 Votes

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's V Cartigueyane has emerged victorious from the Nellithope constituency in Puducherry, defeating Independent candidate Omsakthisekar by a margin of 850 votes. Nellithope is one of the more densely populated constituencies in Puducherry city, characterized by closely packed residential streets and fairly active commercial areas.

Election Context and Competing Candidates

For the 9 April elections, three candidates were contesting in Nellithope: A Jayakumar of the Lok Janshakti Party representing the National Democratic Alliance, V Karthigeyan of the DMK representing the Secular Progressive Alliance, and S Vigneshwaran of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Notably, Karthigeyan returned to the ballot, aiming to improve upon his 2021 performance in a constituency that has rarely remained with one party for long.

Historical Voting Patterns

The seat has witnessed frequent shifts over the years. The Indian National Congress held it in 2016 and again in a by-election, before the Bharatiya Janata Party's Richards Johnkumar flipped it in 2021, winning by a narrow margin of 496 votes over Karthigeyan. Over 27,000 of the constituency's 33,000 registered voters turned out that year.
