DMK Councillor S Rajalakshmi Defects to AIADMK in Chennai Ceremony
In a significant political development, S Rajalakshmi, the DMK councillor representing ward 77 in the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, officially joined the AIADMK on Friday. The event took place in Chennai under the auspices of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, marking a notable shift in local political allegiances.
Frustration with DMK Treatment Drives Defection
Rajalakshmi, who had been a dedicated member of the DMK for the past 15 years, cited deep-seated dissatisfaction with her former party's approach towards her. "Despite having worked on the ground for so many years and finally becoming a ward councillor, I wasn't even allocated any booth-level works for the upcoming elections," she revealed in an interview with TOI.
She elaborated that this neglect was not an isolated incident, noting that the situation remained unchanged during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. "There is no respect for the councillors within the party and no freedom for public work. Block-level representatives overrule us," Rajalakshmi asserted, highlighting systemic issues within the DMK's internal structure.
Praise for AIADMK and Hints of More Defections
Contrasting her experiences, Rajalakshmi praised the AIADMK for its treatment of party representatives. "AIADMK is far better in giving respect to every individual representing the party," she stated, indicating that this respect was a key factor in her decision to switch sides.
Moreover, she hinted at potential further political realignments, disclosing that "a few more DMK councillors were in talks with AIADMK for a switch over." This suggests that her defection might be part of a broader trend, possibly impacting the political landscape in Coimbatore and beyond.
Background and Implications
The defection underscores ongoing tensions within political parties at the grassroots level, where local representatives often feel marginalized by higher-ranking officials. Rajalakshmi's move could influence ward-level dynamics in Coimbatore, potentially affecting voter sentiment and party strategies in future elections.
As urban development and civic issues remain critical in Coimbatore, such political shifts may have repercussions on local governance and community projects. The incident serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of political loyalties and the importance of internal party respect and work allocation.
