A massive fire erupted at a wholesale medicine shop in Dhubri town in the early hours of Sunday, causing extensive damage and leading to a dramatic rescue operation. The blaze, which broke out on HN Road, gutted pharmaceutical products worth several lakhs of rupees.
Rescue Operation and Firefighting Efforts
The incident took a dangerous turn when three family members of the shop owner found themselves trapped inside the burning building. Firefighters and emergency responders worked swiftly to ensure their safe evacuation. All three individuals were successfully rescued from the premises.
Bringing the fierce flames under control was a significant challenge. It required three fire tenders and approximately three hours of relentless effort by the fire brigade to finally douse the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.
Cause and Assessment of Damage
While the official cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary reports from police sources suggest a possible short circuit might have triggered the disaster. The shop owner, Pradip Roy, stated that a complete assessment of the financial losses is pending. However, he confirmed that the estimated damage runs into several lakhs of rupees, with the entire inventory of medicines reduced to ashes.
A Recurring Problem for Dhubri
This fire marks a worrying trend for Dhubri town, as it is the third such major incident since October this year. The series of fires began on October 21 at the Janata Hawkers' Market, where over a dozen shops selling electronics and garments were completely gutted. That fire resulted in the destruction of goods valued at over one crore rupees.
Subsequently, on October 28, a fire broke out at the Dhubri Town Hotel. Fortunately, that incident did not result in any major damage or casualties. The frequency of these events has raised concerns about fire safety infrastructure and preventive measures in the area.
The local authorities are expected to intensify checks and possibly launch awareness campaigns to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
