Dhanbad Residents Demand Immediate Compensation Amid Environmental Crisis
Residents of Dhanbad district are facing severe hardships due to a surge in underground fires, land subsidence, and gas leaks, leading to widespread demands for immediate compensation and proper rehabilitation. The escalating environmental hazards have sparked protests across several affected localities, with communities insisting on relocation to safer areas and sustainable livelihood options to ensure long-term security.
Protests and Political Warnings Intensify
In response to the growing crisis, protests have erupted in various parts of Dhanbad, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention. Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha has issued a stern warning, threatening to launch a large-scale agitation if prompt action is not taken. He emphasized that affected families must be rehabilitated in locations other than Belgaria township, preferably within BCCL areas, to avoid further risks.
Sinha stressed the critical importance of strict implementation of relief, rescue, and rehabilitation policies, calling for a comprehensive approach to address the multifaceted challenges. Additionally, he urged authorities to immediately repair the Dhanbad-Ranchi road, which has been severely damaged by subsidence in the Kenduadih area, disrupting transportation and daily life for residents.
Political Action and Upcoming Meetings
Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee has announced that a delegation led by him will meet with the Director General of Mine Safety (DGMS) and the District Commissioner (DC) on Thursday to discuss the pressing issues. Chatterjee added that the matter will also be raised in the state assembly, ensuring it receives legislative attention and potential policy reforms.
The situation in Dhanbad underscores a broader environmental and social crisis, with residents grappling not only with immediate dangers but also long-term displacement and economic instability. As demands for compensation and rehabilitation grow louder, the need for swift and effective government response becomes increasingly paramount to prevent further escalation and ensure community safety.
