Dalit Woman Cremated on Road After Locals Block Access in Vaishali

Elderly Dalit Woman Forced to Be Cremated on Road in Vaishali District

In a disturbing incident highlighting caste-based discrimination, an elderly Dalit woman was cremated on a public road after locals allegedly blocked access to the designated cremation ground. The incident occurred on Thursday in Sontho Andhari village under the Goraul police station area of Vaishali district, Bihar.

Family Faces Obstruction During Final Journey

According to police reports, the family of 95-year-old Jhapki Devi attempted to take her body to the cremation ground for her final rites. However, local individuals obstructed the route, preventing the family from proceeding. This obstruction triggered significant tension in the area.

Despite being informed, the police allegedly failed to intervene or ensure safe passage for the grieving family. This lack of action forced the family to perform the cremation on the road itself, a deeply distressing and undignified situation.

Police Explanation and Official Response

Vaishali Superintendent of Police Vikram Sihag provided an explanation for the incident. He stated, “Earlier, there was a path to the cremation ground, but some people built a temple on that route. On Thursday, due to the lack of a path, the family conducted the cremation on the road.”

He further mentioned that the burning wood from the cremation was later extinguished by a fire brigade vehicle. A discussion was held with the circle officer regarding the matter.

Promises of Resolution and Current Situation

SP Sihag added that arrangements to restore access to the cremation ground would be made on Friday. He assured that the situation in the village is currently calm. However, the incident raises serious questions about:

  • The enforcement of laws against caste-based discrimination and obstruction of religious rights.
  • The responsiveness and duty of local police in protecting citizens during such sensitive situations.
  • The ongoing social challenges faced by Dalit communities in accessing basic amenities and performing last rites with dignity.

This event underscores the persistent social inequalities and administrative failures that continue to affect marginalized communities in parts of India, demanding urgent attention and corrective measures.
