CPM Unveils Candidate List for Kerala Assembly Elections

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday announced its intention to contest 86 seats in the upcoming Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. The party revealed the names of 81 candidates, with the remaining five to be declared later. This list includes six CPM-backed Independent candidates and features ten women candidates.

Immediate Campaign Launch

Shortly after the announcement, numerous CPM candidates took to the streets, organizing rallies and commencing their election campaigns on the same day. This swift mobilization underscores the party's preparedness for the electoral battle ahead.

Breakdown of Candidates

CPM state secretary M V Govindan provided detailed insights into the candidate selection. He confirmed that 75 of the 86 candidates are direct party members. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will seek re-election from the Dharmadom constituency. He will be joined by eleven of his cabinet colleagues and 54 sitting MLAs who are also contesting again.

Independent candidates in five constituencies - Koduvally, Kottakkal, Palakkad, Kondotty, and Tirur - will be announced at a later date, Govindan stated. Additionally, the candidate for Thiruvananthapuram central will be decided following a court verdict on Monday regarding a case against MLA Antony Raju.

In a notable move, party-backed Independent T Ashok Kumar will contest from Mahe in Puducherry, reflecting the party's strategic outreach.

Confidence in Retaining Power

Govindan expressed strong confidence in the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) ability to retain power for a third consecutive term. "This victory is crucial to building a Nava Keralam and opposing communal forces," he emphasized, highlighting the ideological stakes of the election.

Opposition's Counter-Claim

However, the opposition Congress party presented a contrasting outlook. V D Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, claimed on Sunday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will form the next government in Kerala. He announced that the UDF's complete list of candidates will be released on Monday.

Satheesan told a press conference in Kochi that candidate selection is intensely focused on winnability. "Team UDF is approaching the elections with confidence and hope. The front will return to power in Kerala with over 100 seats," he asserted.

UDF's Electoral Strategy

Satheesan elaborated on UDF's strategic vision, predicting the success of their 'Mission 26'. He noted that 'Mission 25' has already secured four corporations and seven district panchayats, with two more within reach. He countered the CPM's narrative, arguing that while the CPM projects its MLAs as popular, individual popularity does not solely determine electoral success; broader political circumstances play a decisive role.

The stage is set for a highly competitive election in Kerala, with both major fronts expressing strong confidence in their prospects. The coming weeks will see intensified campaigning as parties vie for the support of Kerala's electorate.
