Chennai Councillors Demand Swift Action on Infrastructure Projects Ahead of Election Code
In a recent council meeting, numerous councillors, predominantly from the DMK party, voiced urgent concerns regarding the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects before the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for upcoming elections. They emphasized that delays could extend for months if projects are halted due to election rules, potentially leading to significant public backlash.
Immediate Concerns Raised by Zone and Ward Representatives
M Mathivanan, the chairperson of Zone III, highlighted a critical issue: "We have less than a month before the assembly election process begins, yet the new zone office for Zone III remains pending. We urge the council to accelerate the process and initiate construction work immediately." This sentiment was echoed by other councillors who stressed the need for timely project completion to maintain public trust.
Specific Project Delays and Public Grievances
Councillors from various wards detailed specific infrastructure lapses that require urgent attention:
- K Kalaiselvi of Ward 51 (DMK) called for expediting new projects, including roads and drains, to prevent public dissatisfaction.
- V Jawagar, a Congress councillor from Ward 2, pointed out issues with a decentralised sewage treatment plant (STP) at Srirangam, which has caused water stagnation near Vadakku Vasal. He urged officials to resolve such grievances swiftly to avoid health and environmental hazards.
- T Muthuselvam, DMK councillor from Ward 57, emphasized the importance of accelerating the budget 2026-27 preparation work to ensure timely funding for projects.
Mayor's Response and Action Plan
In response to these concerns, Mayor Anbalagan assured the council that budget preparation would commence by the first week of February. He directed all departments, including engineering sections, to compile lists of ongoing and pending projects in their respective wards. "Within 15 days, such projects must be completed and opened to the public," the mayor instructed officials, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The mayor's directive aims to streamline project completion and mitigate potential delays caused by the election code, ensuring that infrastructure development continues uninterrupted for the benefit of Chennai's residents.
