Hyderabad: Elderly Siblings Found Deceased in Chaderghat Flat After Neighbours Report Foul Odour
In a tragic incident in Hyderabad, two elderly siblings were discovered dead inside their rented flat at Kalikabar in Chaderghat on Thursday. The grim discovery came after neighbours alerted the police about a foul smell emanating from the premises, leading to a swift response from local authorities.
Police Response and Discovery
At approximately 2:30 PM on Thursday, a patrolling team from the Mir Chowk police station received an alert regarding a foul odour coming from a flat in Sardarji Building at Kalikabar. This location is situated in the lane opposite the Darbar Maisamma temple. Constable Suresh from the Blue Colts patrolling team and home guard Md Dastagir Ali Khan promptly rushed to the scene.
Constable Suresh stated in his complaint, "There was no response to repeated knocks on the door, which was latched from inside." Following this, the Clues Team arrived at the location, and the police were forced to breach the door to gain entry.
Details of the Deceased
Upon entering the flat, police found the decomposed bodies of the two siblings. Neighbours identified them as 85-year-old Sarwar Begum and her younger brother, Shakeel, aged 80. According to Mir Chowk inspector (detective) P Papaiah, "We found the decomposed body of Sarwar Begum in a chair. She was clad in a yellow-and-orange floral nightdress. The decomposed body of Shakeel was found on the floor of the washroom."
A preliminary inquiry revealed that the siblings were unmarried and had been living in the rented flat for nearly 30 years. Shakeel had previously worked in a private company based in Secunderabad over two decades ago. Sarwar Begum was reported to be unwell and relied on her brother's assistance for mobility within the house.
Possible Causes of Death
The detective inspector provided insights into the suspected circumstances leading to their deaths. "Sarwar Begum was unwell and needed her brother's help to move in the house. A neighbour said that she used to remain in the chair most of the time. We suspect that Shakeel might have either accidentally slipped in the bathroom and died of a head injury. Begum might have died due to lack of food and medical assistance. We suspect that they might have died about four to five days ago," the DI explained.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Using a mobile phone belonging to Shakeel found in the house, police contacted family members and relatives of the siblings to inform them of the tragic incident. A suo motu case has been registered under Section 194 of the BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita). The bodies were subsequently shifted for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
This heartbreaking case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by elderly individuals living alone, underscoring the importance of community vigilance and support systems. The police investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the final moments of the siblings' lives.
