Congress Embraces Youthful Faces in Kerala Assembly Elections, Sidelines Veteran Leaders
In a significant strategic move, the Congress party's candidate selection for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections has underscored a deliberate generational shift. While the party is extending support to nearly eight veteran rebels from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), notably including former CPM heavyweight G Sudhakaran, it has simultaneously overlooked a number of its own prominent veteran leaders for candidature.
Ernakulam District Sees Shockwaves as Seasoned Warhorses Excluded
The exclusion of seasoned warhorses in Ernakulam has sent shockwaves through the district unit, highlighting the party's focus on youthful energy. Figures such as Dominic Presentation, Ajay Tharayil, Joseph Vazhakkan, Abdul Muthalib, N Venugopal, K P Dhanapalan, and INTUC leader K P Haridas—all of whom have anchored the party's local machinery for decades—were not even considered for contesting in various seats.
The most poignant example of this transition is Joseph Vazhakkan. Having previously represented Muvattupuzha, Vazhakkan was asked to make way for Mathew Kuzhalnadan. When he shifted his hopes to Ettumanoor, his exclusion there in favor of Nattakom Suresh left a bitter trail, symbolizing the party's push for new faces.
Historical Context and Party Strategy
Former KPCC general secretary N Venugopal noted that Congress has historically attempted to bring in new leaders periodically. He cited examples from the 1970s, which saw the rise of younger leaders like Oommen Chandy, A C Shanmukha Das, and Kadannapalli Ramachandran, and the 1980s, when Ramesh Chennithala and G Karthikeyan rose to prominence.
"This time, the party focused on youthful faces, but it is a mix," Venugopal said, backing the 'generation shift'. "It does not matter whether you are contesting or not; I have worked in various capacities without ever contesting parliamentary or assembly polls."
By barring sitting MPs—most of them veteran leaders—from contesting and promoting fresh faces, Congress aims to counter LDF's organized cadre with youthful vigor and strategic alliances.
Youth Brigade Led by V D Satheesan in Ernakulam
In Ernakulam, opposition leader V D Satheesan is spearheading the young brigade, introducing new faces like Mohammed Shiyas, who has been fielded from the Kochi constituency. Another instance is Kochi deputy mayor Deepak Joy, who received the nod from Tripunithura after veteran leader K Babu recently announced his departure from electoral politics.
What is striking amidst Congress's youthful charge is the party's simultaneous backing of veteran LDF rebels, including G Sudhakaran in Ambalappuzha. This dual approach reflects a calculated gamble to blend experience with fresh perspectives.
Potential Risks and Electoral Implications
By prioritizing generational change and strategic alliances with LDF rebels, Congress is attempting to shed its image as a 'party of veterans'. However, in districts like Ernakulam, where personal loyalty often trumps party symbols, sidelining established names such as Dominic Presentation may prove to be a double-edged sword. The upcoming elections will ultimately determine if this bold strategy pays off, balancing the infusion of new energy with the risk of alienating long-time loyalists.
