Congress Unity: Siddaramaiah Praises Shivakumar at KPCC Dinner

Congress Unity Shines at Lavish Dinner Celebrating DK Shivakumar's KPCC Milestone

In a significant display of political solidarity, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with nearly all Congress ministers and legislators, attended a grand dinner hosted by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The event was organized to commemorate Shivakumar's completion of six years as president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

High Command Intervention Ensures Unified Front

The gathering held particular importance as earlier reports had suggested potential cancellations due to plans by some legislators from Siddaramaiah's camp to skip the event. Sources indicate that the Congress high command intervened directly, instructing all legislators to present a united face and attend the dinner, underscoring the party's emphasis on cohesion.

Siddaramaiah's Laudatory Address

During the event, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah delivered a heartfelt congratulatory speech, praising Shivakumar's dedication and capabilities. He highlighted Shivakumar's "organisational skills, ideological commitment, and hard work" as a model for younger party members to emulate. Siddaramaiah acknowledged the challenges Shivakumar has faced, including what he described as "false cases filed by opposition BJP and various forms of harassment", emphasizing his steadfast loyalty to the Congress party.

"This reflects his uncompromising commitment to the party. His conduct is inspiring for lakhs of Congress workers," Siddaramaiah stated, adding that Shivakumar has worked tirelessly alongside functionaries and workers to defeat "communal forces" and bring Congress to power in Karnataka in 2023.

Collaboration and Future Prospects

Siddaramaiah revealed that Shivakumar has stood "shoulder to shoulder" with him in efforts to rebuild Karnataka as a state of peace and harmony for all communities. He noted that Shivakumar, who is significantly younger, has a "bright political future" and expressed hope that Congress would return to govern in 2028. "I will also join the party's organisational work and struggles to achieve that goal," Siddaramaiah affirmed.

Assembly Camaraderie Earlier in the Day

The camaraderie between the two leaders was also visible earlier in the day during a budget discussion in the assembly. Shivakumar rose to defend Siddaramaiah after opposition leader R Ashoka attacked the government. Criticizing the BJP for staging a protest with empty vessels on budget day, Shivakumar remarked, "You brought empty vessels to Vidhana Soudha to protest even before the budget was presented. This shows your mindset. We call Nirmala Sitharaman's (national) budget an empty vessel."

In response, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Arvind Bellad of the BJP made a swipe, suggesting that if Shivakumar was supporting Siddaramaiah, it appeared "good news" was coming. Shivakumar retorted, "You don't have to worry about all that." BJP state general secretary V Sunil Kumar also ridiculed Shivakumar, claiming he had not attended preliminary budget meetings chaired by the CM and had not commented on the budget after its presentation.

Joining the exchange, Ashoka added, "Whatever Shivakumar had to convey, he has already conveyed it in New Delhi (to the party high command)." This series of interactions highlighted the ongoing political tensions, making the evening's show of unity even more poignant.

The dinner event, marked by lavish arrangements, served as a strategic platform to reinforce internal harmony within the Karnataka Congress, setting a tone of collaboration ahead of future electoral challenges.
