Kerala Congress Teachers Demand Probe into MG University Appointments
The Kerala Pradesh Congress College Teachers Association (KPCTA) has formally requested the state's chief electoral officer (CEO) to launch an inquiry into alleged violations of the model code of conduct by Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University in Kottayam. This move comes amid growing concerns over the timing and transparency of recent appointments to the university's academic boards.
Formal Representation Submitted to CEO
In a detailed representation submitted to CEO Rathan U Kelkar, KPCTA state working committee member Praveen Sakalya raised serious objections to the reconstitution of the undergraduate and postgraduate boards of studies at MG University. The appointments were officially notified through university notifications dated March 16 and March 23, 2024.
The petitioner has specifically questioned the timing of these notifications, pointing out that they coincided with the enforcement of the model code of conduct for elections. This has led to allegations that the university may have deliberately bypassed electoral guidelines to push through these appointments.
Allegations of Political Influence and Lack of Transparency
The representation goes further to highlight troubling allegations that the appointments of chairpersons and members to the boards of studies may have been influenced more by political affiliations than academic merit. According to the KPCTA, there are strong indications that these decisions were politically motivated, potentially compromising the integrity of the academic selection process.
Adding to these concerns is the claim that university authorities have failed to disclose the specific criteria used for selecting board members. This lack of transparency has raised serious questions about the fairness of the appointment process and whether proper academic standards were followed.
Key Concerns Raised by the Teachers Association
- Potential violation of the model code of conduct during election period
- Questionable timing of appointment notifications coinciding with electoral guidelines
- Allegations of political influence overriding academic merit in selections
- Lack of transparency regarding selection criteria for board members
- Concerns about politically motivated decisions affecting academic governance
The KPCTA has urged the chief electoral officer to take appropriate action against what they perceive as clear violations of electoral conduct rules. The teachers association emphasizes that such actions, if proven true, could undermine the credibility of academic institutions and set a dangerous precedent for political interference in educational matters.
This development comes at a sensitive time when educational institutions are expected to maintain strict neutrality during election periods. The outcome of this representation could have significant implications for how universities conduct their administrative processes during electoral cycles in Kerala.
