Congress Leader Slams BJP for Politicizing Traditional Cockfights
Former KPCC general secretary Padmaraj R Poojary made strong accusations against the BJP on Monday. He claimed the party is politicizing traditional cockfight events held at religious shrines in Karnataka's coastal region.
Defending Traditional Practices
Poojary stated clearly that police and the government would not interfere with these events if conducted according to tradition. The Congress-led government will not impose restrictions on traditional practices, he emphasized.
He acknowledged that cockfighting has been misused for gambling on several occasions. With police taking strict action against such illegal activities, many youths who were involved in gambling under the guise of cockfighting have now taken up regular employment, Poojary explained.
Addressing the Hate Speech Bill
On the controversial hate speech bill, Poojary asserted it does not target any individual. Are BJP leaders admitting publicly that they engage in hate speeches? he questioned. The bill is aimed at curbing hate speeches and promoting harmony in the state, he clarified.
Rejecting Police Transfer Allegations
Poojary firmly rejected allegations from BJP representatives about Congress leadership intending to transfer senior police officers from the district. He praised the government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for posting officers who successfully curbed illegal activities and improved law and order.
Ministers have assured that the top officers in the district will not be transferred, he added confidently.
Highlighting Tourism Initiatives
Lauding government initiatives to boost investment in coastal districts, Poojary highlighted the recent Coastal Karnataka Tourism Conclave. This event attracted a massive response from investors, showing strong interest in the region's development.
He appreciated the participation of BJP MLAs and MPs in these efforts but urged them not to mislead the public with political motives. The CM and other ministers have ensured government support to appoint a nodal officer and establish a single-window system for tourism project approvals, Poojary noted.
All MLAs and MPs should cooperate for the overall development of the region, he concluded, calling for bipartisan support in advancing coastal Karnataka's progress.
