Kottayam: Congress leader and former MLA M Murali, aged 73, passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. He was undergoing treatment for a kidney-related ailment at the time of his demise. Murali held the significant position of state chairman of the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Committee, marking his deep involvement in grassroots governance.
Distinguished Political Career and Electoral Journey
M Murali represented the Mavelikkara constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly for four consecutive terms, winning elections in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2006. His political journey later saw him contest from Kayamkulam in 2011 and Chengannur in 2021, though he faced defeat in both attempts. Notably, he was recognized for introducing the highest number of private member's bills in the assembly, showcasing his proactive legislative approach.
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Born to K P Madhavan Pillai and V K Rajamma in Cherukol, Mavelikkara, Murali embarked on his political career in 1969 through the Kerala Students Union (KSU). He quickly rose through the ranks, serving in key roles such as KPCC general secretary, KSU vice-president, and state Youth Congress general secretary. In 1987, he coordinated the Youth Conference of Non-Aligned Countries in Delhi, highlighting his international engagement.

Murali's impact extended beyond politics into education and public administration. He was the first senate member of Mahatma Gandhi University and served on the boards of several prominent institutions, including the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Kerala State Financial Enterprises (KSFE), Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and the Kerala Youth Welfare Board. He also championed private bills proposing the establishment of a Malayalam University and a Kerala Administrative Service, reflecting his commitment to cultural and administrative reforms.
