Congress Leader Govind Singh Dotasra Condemns BJP-Led Rajasthan Government's Bid to Delay Local Elections
In a sharp critique on Monday, Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra launched a scathing attack against the BJP-led state government in Rajasthan for its decision to approach the high court seeking a postponement of urban local body and panchayati raj elections. Dotasra labeled the move as "illogical" and characterized it as a blatant attempt to evade public accountability and democratic responsibilities.
Missed Deadline and Alleged Pretext for Delay
Dotasra highlighted that the high court had previously set a firm deadline of April 15 for conducting these crucial local elections, a mandate that the state government has conspicuously failed to meet. He alleged that the government's petition, which cites eight different grounds for requesting a delay, is nothing more than a pretext designed to defer the polls indefinitely and avoid facing the electorate in a timely manner.
"This petition is a thinly veiled strategy to postpone elections and sidestep voter scrutiny," Dotasra asserted, emphasizing that such actions undermine the very fabric of democratic governance.
Accusations of Undemocratic Policies and Constitutional Failures
Accusing the BJP-led administration of pursuing what he termed "undemocratic policies," Dotasra argued that these maneuvers are actively obstructing Rajasthan's developmental progress. He further alleged that the state government is failing in its constitutional duty to uphold democratic processes and ensure timely elections, which are fundamental to local governance and public representation.
Dismissal of Government's Justifications
Dotasra systematically dismissed the various justifications presented by the government in its petition:
- Shortage of Employees: He questioned the validity of this claim, asking whether new recruitments were being planned and if arrangements could be made to mobilize "1-2 lakh" personnel in the coming months to facilitate the elections.
- Academic Session Concerns: Dotasra pointed out that elections in India are routinely held during extreme weather conditions and throughout school terms, making this concern seem unfounded and irrelevant.
- OBC Commission Report and Reservation Issues: He alleged that these matters are being used as mere excuses to delay the electoral process, arguing that postponing elections without substantial and valid grounds erodes constitutional principles.
Contrast with Congress Governance
Drawing a stark contrast, Dotasra recalled that under the previous Congress government, elections were conducted efficiently even during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. This, he suggested, demonstrates a commitment to democratic norms and the ability to overcome logistical hurdles without resorting to delays.
"Our government showed that elections can be held responsibly even in a crisis, unlike the current administration's attempts to avoid them," he stated, reinforcing his critique of the BJP's approach.
The ongoing controversy highlights deepening political tensions in Rajasthan, with the Congress positioning itself as a defender of democratic integrity against what it perceives as the BJP's evasion tactics. The high court's decision on the petition is now awaited, as it will significantly impact the timeline for local governance elections in the state.
