Coimbatore Auto and Taxi Drivers Stage Protest Over Sudden Rs20 LPG Price Hike
In a significant demonstration of distress, auto and taxi drivers in Coimbatore took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against a private gas station at KNG Pudur near Thadagam. The station had abruptly increased the price of auto LPG, commonly known as auto gas, by Rs20 overnight, sparking widespread outrage among the drivers who depend on it daily.

The protest erupted after drivers, while refueling their vehicles, noticed a substantial rise in their bills. Upon questioning the station management, they were reportedly told to either accept the new price or leave the premises. According to the protesters, the private gas station at KNG Pudur hiked the auto LPG price to Rs84.99 per litre without any prior notification. This stands in stark contrast to other stations in the city, where the same fuel is being sold at Rs64.87 per litre.
Suresh Kumar, a taxi driver involved in the protest, highlighted the station's monopolistic position, stating it is the only gas station in and around KNG Pudur. He accused the management of exploiting the current situation to unjustly increase prices. "Our livelihood will be affected by this," Kumar emphasized, reflecting the deep concerns of the driving community.

The drivers expressed grave fears about their ability to survive if such arbitrary price hikes continue. They operate on razor-thin margins, and a sudden increase of Rs20 per litre translates to a daily loss of nearly Rs300 to Rs500 in earnings. Many drivers lamented that they cannot afford this hike, nor can they pass on the cost to passengers by increasing fares, as this would drive away customers. "This surge will cause us losses. If this trend continues, we will not be able to sustain our lives," one auto driver stated, underscoring the dire economic impact.
