Senior Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Announces Political Comeback in West Bengal
In a significant political development, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury declared on Thursday his intention to return to legislative politics in West Bengal after nearly three decades. The five-time Lok Sabha MP expressed his desire to contest from the Beharampore assembly seat, pending approval from the party's high command and central election committee.
Chowdhury's Political Journey and Current Stance
Citing organizational weakness and time constraints, Chowdhury acknowledged that Congress has had limited focus in the upcoming elections. However, he emphasized the party's strategy to seek revival from its traditional strongholds in central and north Bengal. "I am a foot soldier of Congress and will do whatever the party asks me to," Chowdhury told PTI.
He elaborated on the current political circumstances in Bengal, stating, "Under the current political circumstances in Bengal, the task is to keep the Congress banner flying high, and that's why the AICC pursued all senior state leaders to contest the polls. While some agreed, others didn't. I chose to accept the request."
Historical Context and Electoral Background
Chowdhury's political career includes winning the Nabagram assembly seat in Murshidabad in 1996, which he vacated three years later after securing victory in the 1999 general election from Beharampore. He went on to win four consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Beharampore before facing defeat in 2024 when Trinamool candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan unseated him in a surprising upset.
High-Profile Triangular Contest in Beharampore
Chowdhury's potential entry sets up a high-profile triangular contest in the Beharampore assembly seat. He would face sitting BJP MLA Subrata Moitra (Kanchan) and Trinamool candidate Naru Gopal Mukherjee, who serves as Beharampore civic chief. Both BJP and Trinamool have already published their candidate lists for the upcoming elections.
Opposition Reactions and Political Dynamics
Trinamool candidate Naru Gopal Mukherjee dismissed Chowdhury's challenge, stating, "He has nothing to give to Beharampore. He did nothing though he was five times MP. He will not be a factor here. The fight will be between BJP and Trinamool and we will win as we stay throughout the year."
In contrast, BJP candidate Subrata Moitra acknowledged the shift in political dynamics, saying, "Obviously Chowdhury is a factor in Beharampore and I am hopeful people would support me considering my works."
Congress Strategy and Electoral Prospects
The Congress party's decision to field senior leaders like Chowdhury reflects its strategy to strengthen its presence in West Bengal. Despite organizational challenges, the party aims to leverage its historical support bases in central and north Bengal regions. Chowdhury's potential candidacy represents a calculated move to reclaim lost ground and reestablish Congress as a significant political force in the state.
As the election season approaches, political observers will closely monitor how this triangular contest unfolds in Beharampore and what impact it might have on the broader political landscape of West Bengal.
