Danish Iqbal's Grueling Transformation into Dawood Ibrahim for Dhurandhar 2
In a recent exclusive interview with India Today, actor Danish Iqbal, who portrays the formidable character of Bade Saab, also known as Dawood Ibrahim, in the blockbuster film 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', opened up about the extraordinary efforts behind his performance. The actor shared intricate details of his preparation, revealing a process that demanded immense physical and mental endurance.
The Marathon Makeup Sessions and Physical Challenges
Danish Iqbal disclosed that transforming into Bade Saab required an astonishing 10 to 12 hours of meticulous makeup and preparation each day. To ensure he was fully ready, the actor adopted a disciplined routine, arriving first on the film sets to begin his lengthy transformation process. This dedication highlights his commitment to authenticity in portraying such a complex character.
Once in full costume and makeup, Iqbal faced significant physical constraints. He explained that due to the elaborate getup, he was unable to eat anything or make any movements comfortably. Describing this experience, he quipped, "It was almost like I was observing Ramadan months earlier." Rather than viewing it as a hardship, the actor embraced it as a form of meditation, finding enjoyment in every step of the challenging process.
Mastering the Voice and Character Nuances
Beyond the physical transformation, Danish Iqbal had to meticulously alter his speech and voice to match the persona of a dying man, a key aspect of his role in the movie. He acknowledged that this presented a formidable challenge, stating, "It was a challenge, but a lifetime opportunity. I am thankful that people are enjoying it and sending me so much love." His ability to adapt his vocal delivery added depth to the character, enhancing the overall impact of his performance.
Separating Personal Beliefs from the Character
In the same interview, Danish Iqbal delved into the philosophical aspects of playing a controversial figure like Dawood Ibrahim. He admitted to initial concerns about separating his personal political views and beliefs from the character's narrative. Reflecting on this, he said, "How do you separate them from each other? This was my doubt. And I realized, when I am playing someone, that's my reality, that's my truth. And a character may have his own shade, but as an actor, I cannot judge him."
He emphasized the importance of accepting the character's truth to portray him effectively, noting that this approach likely contributed to the audience's positive reception. "I have to accept his truth to play him well, and I think people liked that. He believes in whatever he's doing, and that's what makes him more threatening," Iqbal added.
The Actor's Creed: Entertainment Over Politics
When questioned about whether having clarity aids in portraying such roles and signing projects like 'Dhurandhar', Danish Iqbal was unequivocal. He asserted, "Absolutely, main abhineta hoon neta nahi (I'm an actor, not a politician)." The actor clarified that his primary responsibility is to entertain audiences through diverse characters, not to engage in political agendas.
He further elaborated, "Honestly, I don't believe in politicizing art. We are not the ones to decide the political agenda. Our job is to entertain audiences through the many characters that we get to play." This perspective underscores his professional ethos, focusing on artistic expression rather than external controversies.
