Maharashtra Chief Secretary Inspects Kumbh Mela Infrastructure, Issues Timely Completion Directives
In a significant development for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Maharashtra Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal conducted a comprehensive inspection tour across Nashik on Friday. During his visit, he issued clear instructions to the Nashik Municipal Corporation and all other involved agencies, emphasizing the urgent need to complete all Kumbh-related projects on schedule while maintaining the highest standards of quality and durability.
Focus on Infrastructure and Civic Amenities
Aggarwal highlighted that the state government is actively engaged in creating essential infrastructure and civic amenities to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims expected for the 2027 event. "The state government is undertaking the creation of key infrastructure and essential civic amenities to handle the expected influx of pilgrims," he stated. He further stressed that all concerned authorities must accelerate ongoing works, ensure timely completion, and strictly adhere to prescribed quality standards.
The chief secretary's first day of inspection specifically targeted time-sensitive projects, particularly those requiring critical milestones to be achieved before the monsoon season arrives. He confirmed that all departments have received explicit instructions to follow schedules meticulously and execute works with quality precision.
Comprehensive Site Inspections
During his extensive tour, Aggarwal personally inspected multiple key project sites, including:
- The proposed vehicular underpass at Dwarka Circle
- A parallel bridge near the Laxmi Narayan temple at Tapovan
- Kapila Sangam and Sadhugram, where sadhus will reside during the Kumbh
- New ghats along the Godavari River being constructed by the water resources department
Additionally, he reviewed crucial upgrades to sewage treatment plants at Tapovan, Agartakali, and Dasak-Panchak. The inspection also covered the Nashik Municipal Corporation's solid waste and compost facility at Vilholi, along with a proposed water treatment plant at the same location.
High-Level Official Presence
The chief secretary was accompanied by a team of senior officials, including Nashik Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri, Kumbh Mela Authority Chairman Pravin Gedam, Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and other key administrative figures. This demonstrates the high priority the state government places on the successful execution of Kumbh Mela preparations.
Event Timeline and Project Scale
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is officially scheduled for 2027, with the ceremonial flag hoisting set to take place on October 31 of this year. The three major Amrit Snans, or holy baths, will occur between August and September 2027. Currently, projects worth over Rs 15,000 crore are under execution, with March 2027 established as the deadline for completion of all major works.
Previous Government Attention
This inspection follows earlier intervention by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who in March took cognizance of undue delays in Kumbh Mela-related infrastructure works in both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. The chief minister had issued warnings that any vested attempts to hinder progress would not be tolerated and had instructed officials to develop measures to ease traffic flow across Nashik city.
The combined efforts of state leadership underscore Maharashtra's commitment to hosting a successful, well-organized, and spiritually significant Simhastha Kumbh Mela that can accommodate devotees from across India and around the world.
