The tense situation in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district, which was rocked by severe violence earlier this week, has shown signs of improvement. Authorities reported that no fresh incidents of violence have occurred in the past 48 hours, indicating a gradual return to calm.
Security Measures Remain Strictly in Place
Despite the easing of immediate tensions, a heavy security blanket continues to cover the affected areas. Army personnel, alongside the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), remain deployed across the region. Their primary objective is to prevent any potential resurgence of conflict. Prohibitory orders, a night curfew, and the suspension of mobile internet services are still actively enforced as precautionary measures to maintain peace.
Recap of the Violent Clashes
The recent unrest centered around the Kheroni area of the district, where massive violence erupted. The clashes resulted in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Two individuals lost their lives, and more than 70 people were injured. Shockingly, among the injured were over 60 police personnel, highlighting the intensity of the confrontations.
Political Condemnation of Communal Slogans
The incident has drawn strong political reactions, particularly concerning reports of inflammatory slogans. Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed profound shock over slogans that were purportedly raised against the indigenous Karbi community during the unrest.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gogoi stated, "I am shocked to hear about the slogans against the people of the Karbi community in Karbi Anglong." He emphasized that such slogans demonstrate ignorance and are deeply disrespectful to the community's identity. Gogoi appealed to the state government to find a path forward that genuinely respects the sentiments and rights of Assam's indigenous populations.
While the immediate violence has paused, the underlying issues and the need for a lasting solution that fosters harmony among communities remain critical challenges for the administration in Assam.
