BSP Mobilizes Cadre for Ambedkar Jayanti in Lucknow Ahead of 2027 UP Elections

With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections scheduled for early 2027, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is strategically showcasing its organizational strength through events linked to Dalit icons. The birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Tuesday, April 14, provides another significant opportunity for the party to demonstrate its support base.

Statewide Gathering at Ambedkar Memorial

BSP workers from across Uttar Pradesh will converge at the Ambedkar Memorial in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, to pay tributes to the architect of the Indian Constitution. UP BSP president Vishwanath Pal, who will serve as the chief guest, stated that the party has mobilized people from all regions for the event. "People will come through their own means and resources, so we can't specify the expected turnout, but it will be substantial," Pal remarked.

Party national president Mayawati will pay her respects to Ambedkar at her residence and will not attend the memorial event. However, in a review meeting of the party's UP unit on March 31, she directed workers to attend in large numbers and bring their families to display the true strength of Babasaheb's followers to opposition parties.

Strategic Messaging and Warnings

Mayawati also cautioned her cadre against falling for opposition parties' designs, noting that they organize commemorative events primarily to secure votes from Bahujans, including Dalits, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and religious minorities. Traditionally, BSP's commemorative events for western UP are held at the Dalit Prerna Sthal in Noida, but due to ongoing renovations, workers from that region will also travel to Lucknow for this program.

This event follows the party's state-level gathering in Lucknow on October 9 last year, which marked the 19th death anniversary of its founder, Kanshiram. Ambedkar Jayanti thus represents the second major state-level show of strength for BSP in recent months.

Contrast with Previous Events

A key difference from the October event is Mayawati's address. During that gathering, she praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for maintaining Dalit memorials built by her government while criticizing Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav for not allocating ticket revenue for their upkeep during his tenure. This time, although she will not publicly address the gathering, her words and directives remain closely watched.

Political Context and Electoral Challenges

The assembly of BSP workers in Lucknow sends a clear message to both the party and its political rivals, especially as multiple claimants vie for Dalit votes and Mayawati's influence has waned since the 2012 UP Assembly elections. BSP recorded its worst-ever performance in the 2022 UP Assembly elections, securing only one seat—Rasra in Ballia—and garnering 12.8% of the vote share.

This mobilization effort underscores BSP's attempt to reclaim its foothold in Uttar Pradesh politics ahead of the critical 2027 elections, emphasizing its connection to Dalit heritage and community solidarity.
