BRS MLA Urges Telangana Government to Reassure Students on Fee Reimbursement Scheme
In a significant development, BRS MLA P Sabitha Indra Reddy has issued a strong appeal to the Telangana government, demanding an immediate public announcement regarding the continuation of the fee reimbursement scheme for students. Speaking out on Saturday, the MLA emphasized the critical need for the Chief Minister to provide clear assurances that the government will reimburse college managements for student fees.
Legacy of Former Chief Ministers at Stake
Sabitha Indra Reddy warned that if the government fails to step forward and make this crucial announcement, it would suggest deliberate conspiracies to erase the legacies of not only former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao but also the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy. She highlighted that this vital scheme was originally introduced by YSR and later continued by KCR, who invoked YSR's name in recognition of its profound benefits for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, and minority students.
The BRS leader articulated her concerns in a detailed post on the social media platform 'X', stressing that the state must now, at the very least, assure students of the scheme's rollout. She pointed out that the recent High Court verdict is likely to adversely affect approximately 13 lakh BC, SC, ST, and minority students across Telangana who rely heavily on this fee reimbursement to pursue higher education.
Mental Distress and Financial Implications
"The verdict is likely to cause significant mental distress among students," Sabitha stated, underscoring the emotional and psychological impact on the student community. Additionally, she revealed that the government owes an estimated Rs 12,000 crore to college managements in pending dues, a figure that highlights the substantial financial burden and administrative challenges involved.
The former Home Minister further alleged that in previous instances, when college managements demanded their fee reimbursement dues, the government made promises of payment while simultaneously attempting to intimidate them. This dual approach, she argued, has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear among educational institutions.
Call for Continuation of Beneficial Scheme
Sabitha Indra Reddy concluded by urging the state to take decisive measures to ensure the continuation of this scheme, which she described as immensely beneficial to students from marginalized backgrounds. She emphasized that the fee reimbursement program is not just a financial aid mechanism but a cornerstone of educational equity and opportunity in Telangana.
The MLA's statements have sparked discussions on the future of student welfare policies in the state, with many calling for transparent and prompt government action to address these pressing concerns.
