BJP Announces Third Candidate List for Kerala Assembly Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday released its third list of candidates for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections, announcing nominees for 11 constituencies and taking the total number of declared candidates to 97. The announcement marks a significant step in the party's electoral strategy as it seeks to expand its presence in the southern state.

New Candidates Across Multiple Constituencies

The party has named V Ratheesh for Peermade, Ravindranath Vakathanam for Puthuppally, Ajimon for Mavelikkara, Pandalam Prathapan for Adoor, K R Rajesh for Chavara, R S Arun Raj for Chadayamangalam, B S Anoop for Chirayinkeezhu, Karamana Jayan for Thiruvananthapuram, Vivek Gopan for Aruvikkara, T N Suresh for Kovalam and Rajasekharan Nair for Neyyattinkara. This diverse slate represents the BJP's attempt to field candidates across various regions of Kerala.

Former Congress Leaders Join BJP Ranks

Notably, former Congress leaders Anoop and Arun Raj have been fielded as BJP candidates soon after joining the party. Both were formally inducted into the BJP by state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Saturday morning following their departure from Congress due to dissatisfaction over candidate selection processes.

Anoop, a former block panchayat member who was the Congress candidate in Chirayinkeezhu during the 2021 assembly elections, quit Congress alleging that the party overlooked local opposition while selecting candidates. He specifically protested the nomination of Ramya Haridas, claiming the decision disregarded grassroots sentiment.

Arun Raj, a former Youth Congress general secretary and KPCC executive committee member, also exited the party citing similar concerns about candidate selection procedures. His inclusion in the BJP list represents a significant political shift for the experienced party worker.

Strategic Candidate Selection Decisions

Meanwhile, BJP decided to field Karamana Jayan as its candidate for Thiruvananthapuram, overlooking former minister and RJD state leader Surendran Pillai who recently left the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Party sources indicated that Jayan's extensive organisational experience and strong local presence weighed heavily in his favour despite internal discussions about alternative candidatures.

Another notable inclusion is T N Suresh, who had recently left the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) before joining the BJP. His selection demonstrates the party's strategy of incorporating experienced politicians from various backgrounds to strengthen its electoral prospects.

Expanding Electoral Footprint

With this third list, the BJP has now declared candidates for 97 constituencies, signaling its intention to contest elections across a broad spectrum of Kerala's political landscape. The inclusion of former Congress leaders and other political defectors represents a calculated move to leverage their existing political networks and local influence.

The party's decision to field candidates in constituencies like Thiruvananthapuram, Aruvikkara, and Neyyattinkara indicates a focus on both urban and semi-urban areas where it believes it can make significant electoral gains. As the election campaign intensifies, these candidate selections will play a crucial role in determining the BJP's performance in Kerala's competitive political environment.
