In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Swapan Dasgupta won the Rashbehari constituency in Kolkata, securing 74,123 votes. He defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Debasish Kumar, also known as Deba, by a margin of 20,865 votes. Kumar received 53,258 votes. CPI(ML) Liberation's Manas Ghosh finished third with 5,618 votes, followed by Congress's Ashutosh Chatterjee with 2,427 votes. A total of ten candidates contested from Rashbehari, along with the NOTA option.
Constituency Profile
Rashbehari is a fully urban constituency in the Kolkata district, falling under the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat. It covers upscale and middle-class residential areas in southern Kolkata. The seat is named after Rashbehari Avenue, one of south Kolkata's major thoroughfares. It is known for its educated, cosmopolitan electorate with a significant presence of professionals.
Historical Voting Patterns
In the 2021 assembly election, TMC's Debasish Kumar won the seat by a margin of over 21,000 votes against BJP's retired Lieutenant General Subrata Saha. TMC polled approximately 53 per cent of the vote, while the BJP secured around 36 per cent. The INC came third with about 8 per cent. In 2016, TMC also won the seat, continuing the party's dominance in this part of Kolkata. Historically, the constituency alternated between TMC and INC, but since 2011, TMC had held it firmly.
Competitive Nature
The constituency's educated swing-voter base makes it one of the more competitive seats in south Kolkata. The latest results reflect a shift in voter preference, with the BJP making significant inroads.
