NEW DELHI: In the 2026 Assam assembly elections, BJP candidate Sushanta Borgohain emerged victorious in the Demow constituency, securing a total of 89,681 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Ajoy Kumar Gogoi by a decisive margin of 33,528 votes. The Demow seat, numbered 95, is located in Sivasagar district and was formed after the 2023 delimitation from the former Thowra constituency (No. 107).
Election Details and Voter Turnout
The constituency had a total of 178,390 registered voters, comprising 87,716 males, 90,673 females, and one voter from the third gender. The elections were held on April 9, 2026, with results declared on May 4. There were 230 polling stations set up across the constituency.
Background of the Candidate
Sushanta Borgohain, the sitting MLA from the BJP, had previously won the Thowra seat in 2021 by a margin of 2,006 votes over BJP's Kushal Dowari (48,026 votes vs. 46,020). He was the likely BJP candidate again, as hinted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Key Issues in Demow Constituency
The Demow constituency faces several challenges, including annual floods and riverbank erosion that displace communities and ruin agriculture, which is Assam's primary occupation. High youth unemployment, exacerbated post-floods, leads to labor shortages and migration. Inadequate disaster management, such as poor relief camps, and limited industrial development are also pressing concerns.
State-Wide Election Trends
Exit polls released on Wednesday evening for the high-stakes Assam battle indicate a clear majority for the incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, with most pollsters favoring the BJP to secure a third consecutive term in the tea-producing state. The BJP's performance in Demow reflects the broader trend in Assam.
