In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has further consolidated its authority within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Bihar. Veteran leader Prem Kumar was elected as the new Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, succeeding his party colleague Nand Kishore Yadav.
A Unanimous Election for a Record Holder
The election process was smooth, with Prem Kumar being the sole nominee for the prestigious post. His election was declared unanimous through a voice vote. Following the announcement, the assembly hall resonated with chants of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Jai Shri Ram." This appointment marks a crucial milestone for Kumar, who is a political stalwart from the region.
Kumar, 70, has created a political record by winning the Gaya Town assembly seat for an unprecedented ninth time in the recent state elections. His deep-rooted connection with the constituency and his extensive legislative experience made him a natural choice for the Speaker's role.
Tightening the BJP's Grip in Bihar
This development is strategically important for the BJP. It comes just days after the party secured the crucial Home portfolio, which was held by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for nearly two decades. The Speaker's position is now seen as a key lever of influence in Bihar's volatile political landscape.
The role of the Assembly Speaker has gained immense importance in the state over the past eight years. This period has been marked by frequent changes in government due to unpredictable realignments and shifting political alliances. The Speaker holds significant power in conducting house business and interpreting rules, which can be pivotal during tight political situations.
JDU's Reaction to the Change
However, the Janata Dal (United) or JDU, BJP's alliance partner, downplayed suggestions that it had lost a significant position to the BJP. Senior JDU minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary addressed reporters and questioned the narrative. "When did we have the post that we lost it?" Choudhary stated.
Historically, the JDU held the Speaker's post from November 2005 to November 2020. Notably, Vijay Kumar Choudhary himself served a term as the Speaker during this lengthy period. His comments indicate an attempt to present the allocation of the Speaker's chair as a routine organizational decision within the coalition rather than a concession.
The unanimous election of Prem Kumar as Speaker underscores the current cohesion within the NDA alliance in Bihar while clearly signaling the BJP's assertive and strengthened position in the state's governance structure.
