Veteran BJP Leader Bijoya Chakravarty Affirms Party Supremacy Over Individual Interests
In a significant statement from Guwahati, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bijoya Chakravarty, aged 87, has strongly emphasized that the party's collective interests take precedence over individual aspirations. Chakravarty, who joined the BJP in 1993 and represented the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency three times, expressed unwavering confidence that the BJP will once again form the government in Assam following the upcoming elections.
Addressing Daughter's Ticket Denial with Party Discipline
Chakravarty made these remarks while referring to her daughter, Suman Haripriya, a sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Hajo constituency. Notably, the Hajo constituency ceased to exist after the 2023 delimitation process, and Haripriya was subsequently denied a ticket in this election cycle. Chakravarty clarified the situation, stating, "She may be my daughter, but she is a party worker. BJP's system is different. Many aspirants may have the merit to secure a ticket, but only one person can be chosen per constituency. You may miss out despite having the merit."
This statement underscores the BJP's rigorous and merit-based candidate selection process, where even close family members are not exempt from the party's internal protocols and decisions. Chakravarty's comments highlight a broader principle of organizational discipline within the BJP, where loyalty to the party's goals is paramount.
Confidence in BJP's Electoral Prospects in Assam
Speaking to the media after inaugurating the election office of BJP's New Guwahati candidate, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah, at Hengerabari, Chakravarty projected a strong electoral performance for the party. She asserted that the BJP would secure the maximum number of seats in the state assembly elections. Chakravarty attributed this confidence to the developmental work carried out across Assam over the past decade under the BJP-led government.
"The development carried out across the state over the last 10 years under the BJP-led government leaves people with no alternative," she added, pointing to the administration's track record as a key factor in garnering public support. This sentiment reflects the party's strategy of leveraging its governance achievements as a central plank in its campaign narrative.
Chakravarty's Political Legacy and Contributions
Bijoya Chakravarty's political journey is marked by significant milestones. She joined the BJP in 1993 and has since been a prominent figure in Assam's political landscape. Her electoral successes include serving as the Lok Sabha MP from the Gauhati constituency from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2009 to 2019, demonstrating her enduring appeal and commitment to public service.
Her recent statements not only reinforce the BJP's internal discipline but also serve to rally party workers and supporters ahead of the crucial elections. By publicly addressing the ticket denial of her daughter, Chakravarty sets an example of putting party interests first, potentially strengthening the BJP's image as a disciplined and focused political organization.
As Assam gears up for the elections, Chakravarty's endorsement of the party's candidate selection process and her optimistic outlook on BJP's prospects are likely to resonate with voters and party cadres alike, shaping the political discourse in the region.
