BJP Ramps Up Efforts to Secure Gurjar Support in Western Uttar Pradesh
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively working to consolidate its influence among the politically crucial Gurjar community in western Uttar Pradesh, as preparations intensify for the upcoming assembly elections next year. This strategic move gains heightened importance following a recent rally by Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav in Dadri, where he pledged to erect a grand statue of Samrat Mihir Bhoj, a revered 9th-century ruler from the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, along the Gomti riverfront in Lucknow.
BJP's Multi-Pronged Strategy to Counter Opposition Outreach
According to sources within the Uttar Pradesh BJP, the party's leadership is considering measures to increase Gurjar representation in rural local bodies, particularly in zila panchayats, with elections anticipated later this year. The Gurjar community, which constitutes approximately 7-10% of the population in western UP, holds significant sway over electoral outcomes in more than three dozen assembly constituencies across districts such as Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Shamli, and Bijnor.
Satyendra Sisodia, BJP's west UP president, emphasized, "The Gurjar community has always been firmly aligned with our party. We are committed to safeguarding their interests and preventing any attempts by the opposition to mislead them."
Current Gurjar Representation in BJP and Allied Parties
The BJP has already established a notable presence of Gurjar leaders across various legislative bodies. In the Lok Sabha, the party is represented by Kanwar Singh Tanwar from Amroha and Surendra Singh Nagar in the Rajya Sabha. Within the Uttar Pradesh assembly, BJP boasts five MLAs from the community: Nand Kishore Gurjar (Loni), Tejpal Nagar (Dadri), Kirat Singh Gurjar (Gangoh), Somendra Tomar (Meerut South), and Mukesh Chaudhary (Nakur). Notably, Somendra Tomar also serves as a minister in the UP government.
Additionally, Narendra Singh Bhati (Bulandshahr-Noida Local Authorities) and Virender Singh (Shamli) represent the party in the Legislative Council. The BJP's ally, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), maintains some support among Gurjars, with Gurjar MP Chandan Chauhan in the Lok Sabha and two of its nine MLAs in the state assembly—Madan Singh Kasana (also known as Madan Bhaiyya) and Pradeep Chaudhary—belonging to the community. It is worth noting that both RLD MLAs secured their seats in the 2022 elections when the party was allied with the SP.
Political Implications and Broader Electoral Dynamics
Akhilesh Yadav's outreach is widely perceived as a calculated effort to expand the SP's voter base beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav coalition by appealing to non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBCs), including Gurjars. Currently, the BJP's stronghold among non-Yadav OBC communities is a cornerstone of its electoral dominance in Uttar Pradesh. While the SP improved its tally in the 2022 assembly elections, it failed to significantly erode the BJP's core support base.
Political experts observe that the BJP has taken serious note of this renewed push by the opposition, as the party seeks to protect its broader social coalition, particularly among non-Yadav OBC groups, which has been instrumental in its electoral successes across the state. The ongoing efforts highlight the intense competition for community support as both major parties strategize for the forthcoming electoral battles.
