The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday brought to light a deeply disturbing incident of violence from West Bengal, sharing a video that purportedly shows a woman and her family members being savagely beaten with bamboo sticks. The party's top leaders have launched a sharp attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, accusing it of a complete breakdown of law and order.
Graphic Video Sparks Political Firestorm
The video, which has gone viral on social media platform X, captures a brutal assault occurring in broad daylight. According to the BJP, the incident took place in Uttar Bhangnamari village under the Basanti block of the Canning sub-division in South 24 Parganas district. The party has named Jalil Laskar, Munna Laskar, and Arif Laskar as the main accused in the attack.
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP's national IT cell and the party's central observer for West Bengal, was among the first to share the clip. In his post, he made a strong indictment of the state's administration. "No woman is safe in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal," Malviya wrote. He stated that the visuals, which he described as "disturbing," emerged from the mentioned village and that the video unequivocally showed the brutality faced by the woman and her family.
BJP Leaders Condemn "Brazen" Violence
Malviya further elaborated that irrespective of the background of any dispute, the sight of women being beaten publicly with sticks was horrifying. He expressed greater shock at the apparent absence of fear of the law among the perpetrators. "Such brazen violence suggests that the perpetrators are confident of getting away, either because of political patronage or the complicity and apathy of the state machinery," he added.
The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also amplified the issue by sharing the video on his X handle. His message was a direct call for political change: "This Anti Women State Govt must be ousted for the sake of safety of Women of West Bengal."
Echoing the sentiment, senior BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said the nature of the assault had caused concern across the nation. "The manner in which women were assaulted in West Bengal under the Mamata Banerjee government reflects a complete breakdown of law and order in the state," Trivedi remarked.
Mounting Pressure on the State Government
The circulation of the video and the subsequent statements from the BJP's national leadership have turned the incident into a major political flashpoint. The opposition party is using this event to bolster its longstanding criticism of the Trinamool Congress government's handling of law and order, particularly concerning women's safety. The graphic nature of the video adds a potent visual element to their accusations, likely to fuel further debate and demand for action from the state authorities.
As of now, the West Bengal police's official response or action taken regarding the specific accused named by the BJP is awaited. The incident has undoubtedly intensified the political rivalry in the state, with the BJP positioning itself as the voice highlighting governance failures.
