BJP Nominates Shrichand Tejwani for Amravati Mayor Post in Historic Decision

In a significant political development in Amravati, the Bharatiya Janata Party has finalized the name of Shrichand Tejwani for the prestigious post of mayor of the Amravati Municipal Corporation. This decision comes after all Mahayuti allies united following their independent contest in the recent municipal elections.

Historic Milestone for Sindhi Community in Maharashtra

City BJP chief Dr Nitin Dhande confirmed to media outlets that this appointment marks a historic moment in Maharashtra's political landscape. "This will be the first time a corporator from the Sindhi community will become a mayor in Maharashtra," Dhande emphasized, highlighting the community's longstanding support for the BJP.

Tejwani, who represents the Jawahar Stadium prabhag and has been elected for the second consecutive term, will serve as mayor for an initial period of 1.5 years. Following his tenure, Ashish Atkare of the BJP is slated to assume the mayoral responsibilities for the subsequent 1.5-year term.

Strong Mahayuti Coalition Forms Unassailable Majority

The political landscape in Amravati has transformed with the Mahayuti alliance consolidating its position. "Mahayuti allies NCP (AP), Shiv Sena (Shinde), and Yuva Swabhiman Party have come together for mayor and deputy mayor elections, lending the Mahayuti coalition in AMC an unassailable strength," Dhande stated confidently.

The coalition now commands a formidable position with 54 corporators in the 87-member House, comfortably exceeding the required majority of 44. The breakdown of this alliance reveals:

  • BJP as the single-largest party with 25 corporators
  • Yuva Swabhiman Party following with 15 corporators
  • NCP (AP) contributing 11 members
  • Shiv Sena (Shinde) adding 3 corporators

Nomination Process and Upcoming Elections

The mayoral elections have been scheduled for February 6, with Tejwani already filing his nomination papers at the AMC office on Monday. BJP leaders, including Dr Dhande, accompanied the mayoral candidate during this important procedural step.

Regarding other key positions, the city BJP chief indicated that the name for the standing committee chairman would be determined at a later stage, suggesting ongoing negotiations within the alliance.

Deputy Mayor Positions and Youth Leadership Focus

In a parallel development, the Yuva Swabhiman Party, led by MLA Ravi Rana, has nominated two corporators for the deputy mayor positions. Sachin Bhende from Sainagar Prabhag will serve as deputy mayor for the first 1.5 years, followed by Ajay Jayswal from Badnera New City Prabhag for the subsequent term.

YSP office-bearer Sunil Rana explained the strategic thinking behind this arrangement: "The decision gives both prabhags a chance to lead and showcase the party's commitment to youth leadership and development." He further elaborated on the party's priorities, emphasizing transparency, basic amenities, and development works for the upcoming term.

Opposition Position and Political Dynamics

With the Congress party holding only 15 corporators in the municipal body, political observers believe the opposition is unlikely to present any significant challenge in the mayoral elections. Even if Congress decides to contest the polls, the Mahayuti coalition's numerical superiority appears insurmountable.

Dr Dhande expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating: "City's development will be taken forward under Tejwani's leadership with the support of corporators." This sentiment reflects the broader expectation that the strengthened Mahayuti alliance will drive Amravati's urban development agenda with renewed vigor and coordination.
