Ahmedabad's Political Paradox: BJP and Congress Lose on Home Turf
In a striking electoral anomaly spanning over two decades, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections have revealed a persistent paradox. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently failed to secure victory from the ward housing its city office, while the Gujarat Congress has been unable to win even a single seat from the ward where its state headquarters is located.
BJP's Struggle in Khanpur and Jamalpur Wards
The BJP's state office was historically based in Khanpur for many years. Approximately a decade ago, the party relocated its state headquarters to Kamalam in Koba at Gandhinagar. However, the Ahmedabad city BJP office continues to operate from the Khanpur location, a site where numerous prominent BJP leaders have conducted meetings at JP Chowk.
According to sources within the AMC, from 2000 to 2010, the city was divided into 64 wards. During this period, the BJP's Khanpur office fell within the old Raikhad ward. Despite its presence, the party's councillors never managed to win from this area. Instead, Congress panels consistently dominated the ward.
In the 2000 AMC election, three Congress corporators were elected from the Raikhad ward, contributing to Congress coming to power in the corporation. Notably, one of these Congress corporators, Anisabegam Mirza, served as the mayor of Ahmedabad from April 16, 2003, to October 15, 2005.
After 2010, due to delimitation, the number of wards in the AMC was reduced from 64 to 48, with four councillors assigned to each ward. The old Raikhad ward was dissolved, and its area was merged into the newly formed Jamalpur ward. However, the BJP's electoral fortunes did not improve with these new boundaries.
In the 2010 election, a Congress panel won from the Jamalpur ward. In 2015, the ward elected three Congress councillors and one independent candidate. Most recently, in the 2021 election, a panel of four All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporators swept the Jamalpur ward, yet the BJP still could not secure a single seat, continuing its losing streak.
Congress's Failure in Paldi Ward
An equally paradoxical trend has emerged in the Paldi ward, located in western Ahmedabad. This ward houses the Gujarat Congress's main office, known as Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan. Despite this, Paldi ward has not elected a single Congress councillor in the last five AMC elections.
Even in 2000, when Congress came to power in the AMC, a panel of three BJP councillors was elected from the Paldi ward. The BJP maintained its dominance in this area, winning consistently in the 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2021 elections. This has effectively kept the Congress out of its own home turf, highlighting a significant electoral challenge for the party.
This ongoing paradox underscores the complex local dynamics at play in Ahmedabad's municipal politics, where party offices do not necessarily translate into electoral success in their immediate vicinities.
