BJP Candidate Asserts Need for Double-Engine Government in Tamil Nadu
In a campaign event in Madurai on Saturday, BJP's candidate for Madurai South, Raama Sreenivasan, emphasized that a double-engine government—where the state and central administrations work in close coordination—is essential for the rapid development of Tamil Nadu. Speaking during the "Walk with Professor" event at Mariamman Teppakulam, Sreenivasan outlined his vision for transforming the city's infrastructure and addressing long-standing civic issues.
Special Package Pledge from Prime Minister Modi
Sreenivasan made a bold promise to the residents of Madurai, stating that if elected as MLA, he would secure a special package from Prime Minister Narendra Modi within one year. This package, he claimed, would be specifically aimed at improving the city's basic infrastructure needs, which he argued have been neglected under the current DMK-led state government.
Criticism of DMK Administration
Addressing reporters, Sreenivasan launched a sharp critique of the DMK administration, accusing them of allowing Madurai to deteriorate into what he called a garbage city. He highlighted several key issues plaguing the urban area:
- Broken and poorly maintained roads causing daily inconveniences.
- A non-functional municipal corporation failing to provide essential services.
- A lack of basic safety measures, putting public welfare at risk.
He asserted that the public is suffering due to these administrative failures and pledged to bring about significant change through effective governance.
Campaign Strategy and Public Engagement
Earlier in the day, Sreenivasan arrived for a morning walk around the Teppakulam, using the opportunity to engage directly with voters. In a considerate move, he requested BJP cadres to walk on the side of the road to avoid disrupting other morning walkers. During this interactive session, he:
- Met with fellow walkers and canvassed for votes, greeting people warmly and promising transformative development.
- Engaged with roadside vendors, seeking their support and promising more benefits, including improvements to their stalls.
- Expressed confidence in victory, noting strong support for the BJP in Madurai South constituency.
Focus on Central Schemes Implementation
Sreenivasan also addressed the issue of central government schemes, alleging that the state government is currently blocking their proper implementation. He vowed to ensure these schemes are executed efficiently, leveraging the double-engine model to bypass state-level obstacles and deliver benefits directly to the people. This, he argued, would accelerate development and address the infrastructure gaps more effectively than the current setup.
The campaign event underscored the BJP's strategy to highlight coordination between state and central governments as a key electoral issue, positioning itself as a solution to Madurai's urban challenges ahead of the upcoming assembly election.
