BJP Unveils Ambitious Manifesto for 2026 Assam Assembly Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its comprehensive election manifesto for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, outlining a bold vision for the state's future. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented the document, which focuses on security, social reform, economic development, and environmental resilience.
Key Security and Social Reform Pledges
The manifesto commits to two major policy initiatives:
- Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across Assam, aiming to standardize personal laws for all citizens regardless of religion.
- Removal of illegal immigrants, specifically referred to as 'Bangladeshis', to address long-standing concerns about infiltration and demographic changes.
These measures are positioned as efforts to strengthen national security and promote social harmony within the state.
Economic and Employment Generation Plans
Addressing youth unemployment, a critical issue in Assam, the BJP has set an ambitious target. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the new government will directly provide two lakh (200,000) government jobs over the next five years. Furthermore, the party plans to foster entrepreneurship and support start-ups, with the goal of generating employment for an additional 10 lakh (1,000,000) youths through these private sector initiatives.
This combined approach aims to create a total of 12 lakh new employment opportunities, significantly boosting the state's economy and providing livelihoods for a large segment of the population.
Environmental and Infrastructure Commitment
A standout promise in the manifesto is the pledge to make Assam a flood-free state. Assam has historically suffered from severe annual flooding, causing widespread damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and displacing communities. The BJP's plan involves comprehensive water management strategies, improved drainage systems, and sustainable environmental practices to mitigate this perennial challenge.
The manifesto, released on March 31, 2026, as reported by Sumir Karmakar, sets the stage for a highly contested election, with the BJP seeking to retain power based on these transformative promises.
