Punjab BJP Accuses AAP of Misusing Power Ahead of Rural Polls, Vows Solo Fight in 2027
BJP Alleges AAP Misusing Govt Machinery in Punjab Rural Polls

In a sharp escalation of political rhetoric, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Punjab unit has launched a scathing attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of attempting to manipulate the upcoming rural local body elections. The allegations were made as the BJP's state election committee met in Chandigarh to finalize its candidates for the polls.

Allegations of Misuse of Government Machinery

Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday claimed that the AAP intends to secure victory in the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections by improperly using government resources. He drew a parallel to the party's performance in the 2022 municipal corporation and nagar council elections, shortly after it formed the state government.

"The AAP wants to win these rural elections by misusing government machinery in the same manner they did to install its mayors and presidents in municipal elections after forming the government in 2022," Sharma alleged while speaking to the media in Chandigarh. His comments came just before the crucial meeting of the party's state election committee.

BJP's Solo Ambition and Scathing Critique of AAP

In a significant political declaration, Sharma announced that the BJP would contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections entirely on its own strength, without any alliances. He used the opportunity to launch a broadside against the AAP government's track record over the past two years.

He posed a series of pointed questions to highlight the administration's perceived failures: "Has it been able to control law and order in the state? Have the drug mafia and gangsterism ended? Have the promises made to farmers, labourers, and women been fulfilled?" This critique forms the core of the BJP's emerging campaign narrative against the incumbent government.

Candidate Finalization and Seat-Wise Strategy

As the state election committee meeting progressed, Punjab BJP general secretary provided an update in an evening press conference. He confirmed the party's strategic decision to contest all Zila Parishad and Block Samiti seats under the party's official symbol.

He revealed that the candidate selection process had required intervention from the state election committee due to high demand for party tickets. "Earlier, the party was looking to decide candidates for the ensuing polls, but as there were three to four claimants for the party ticket in many constituencies, the state election committee had to intervene," he explained.

By Tuesday, the committee had made substantial progress. Candidates for 19 out of the 36 state BJP districts had been finalized. Specifically, the party cleared 127 candidates for Zila Parishad and 1,081 candidates for Block Samiti elections. The remaining candidates for all seats were expected to be finalized by the end of the night, setting the stage for a fiercely contested rural poll.

The developments mark the beginning of a heated electoral battle in Punjab's grassroots political arena. The BJP's allegations and its decision to go solo in the future assembly polls signal a confident and aggressive posture, aiming to directly challenge the AAP's governance model and expand its own base in the state.
