Bihar Government Unveils Ambitious Plan to Elevate Key Tourist Destinations to Global Standards

In a significant move to revitalize its tourism sector, the Bihar government has announced a comprehensive strategy to develop major tourist sites—Gaya, Bodh Gaya, Rohtas-Kaimur, and Vaishali—on par with iconic destinations like Gujarat's Statue of Unity and Vaishno Devi. This initiative aims to enhance attractions and facilities to meet international tourism benchmarks, positioning Bihar as a premier travel hub.

High-Level Review Meeting Sets the Stage for Transformation

At a crucial review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit on Monday, state officials were directed to conduct an in-depth study of the successful models of the Statue of Unity and Vaishno Devi. The tourism department, along with district officials, participated via video conferencing to discuss the evaluation matrix prepared for developing these sites. Bodh Gaya and Vaishali were particularly emphasized due to their profound historical and religious significance, which holds immense potential for attracting both domestic and international visitors.

Focus on Infrastructure and Private Sector Engagement

Current efforts are concentrated on building basic infrastructure, improving civic amenities, and ensuring last-mile connectivity to enhance visitor experience. A key component of the plan is promoting private sector participation through public-private partnerships (PPP), which is expected to drive innovation and efficiency in tourism development.

Chief Secretary Amrit underscored the importance of designing these sites to cater to international tourists, rather than solely addressing local needs. He advised officials to meticulously study the facilities at the Statue of Unity and Vaishno Devi, using those insights to formulate a detailed work plan for Bihar's destinations.

Granting Industry Status to Boost Investment

To attract substantial private investment, the government is taking steps to grant industry status to the tourism sector. Amrit directed the tourism department to expedite the issuance of a notification in this regard, anticipating that this move will unlock new funding opportunities and spur economic growth.

Additionally, the chief secretary instructed the department to complete all necessary documentation for centrally-supported projects to ensure a steady flow of central assistance, which is vital for the timely execution of development plans.

Enhancing Existing Services and Monitoring Progress

The meeting also highlighted the need for urgent reforms to improve the quality of existing tourist services and information centers. Officials were tasked with monitoring the ongoing work based on the evaluation matrix to ensure that development aligns with global standards and achieves the desired outcomes.

This holistic approach not only aims to elevate Bihar's tourism infrastructure but also to create sustainable economic opportunities through enhanced visitor engagement and private sector collaboration.
