Telangana's Bhu Bharati Portal Marks New Era in Land Rights with 5 Crore Visits
In a significant development for land administration in Telangana, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced that the Bhu Bharati portal has attracted nearly five crore visitors over the past year. He emphasized that this milestone represents not merely the anniversary of a law but the dawn of a transformative period for land rights protection in the state.
Minister Reviews Progress Ahead of Portal's First Anniversary
On Monday, ahead of the portal completing one year on Tuesday, Minister Reddy engaged with revenue officials to discuss the conditions before and after the implementation of the Bhu Bharati Act. He highlighted the severe challenges faced by Telangana residents under the previous BRS government's Dharani portal, which was introduced in 2020 without proper procedures. "People were forced to run around offices to establish their land claims, even though the land belonged to them," he recalled, underscoring the inefficiencies of the old system.
Transparency and Integration Underpin New System
Reddy stated that the current Congress government is revolutionizing the revenue system by adhering to principles of transparency, accountability, and efficiency. "We are bringing the revenue system closer to the people, thereby completely transforming the earlier situation," he said. The historic Bhu Bharati Act has made land administration in Telangana more straightforward and accessible.
To achieve this, the government has integrated the revenue, survey, stamps, and registration departments under a single framework. This integration was developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), a central government agency, resulting in the launch of the Bhu Bharati portal on a pilot basis on April 2 last year across five mandals in five districts.
Expansion Plans and Permanent Solutions
The minister outlined future steps, noting that the government will evaluate the pros and cons encountered in these pilot areas before expanding the portal to one mandal per district next month. "In these five mandals, we will also assign a Bhu Dhar number to every survey number," he explained. The primary aim is to provide a permanent solution to land disputes in Telangana, reducing the need for citizens to frequent revenue offices.
From Promise to Reality: Launch and Impact
Fulfilling an election promise, the Congress government abolished the Dharani portal immediately after assuming power. On April 14 last year, coinciding with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy officially launched the Bhu Bharati portal. Reddy hailed it as a "powerful tool in ensuring land security for Telangana's farmers" and a significant step toward minimizing land-related conflicts.
Over the past 12 months, the portal has played a crucial role in resolving long-standing disputes. In its inaugural year, it recorded over 52 million visits and approximately 6.7 million user logins. Additionally, since April 14, 2025, the portal has facilitated the issuance of 3.80 lakh new passbooks, further cementing its utility in streamlining land records.
This initiative marks a pivotal shift in Telangana's governance, prioritizing citizen-centric services and robust land rights protection through technological innovation.
