Bhopal Metro Faces Political Hurdle Over Underground Route Near Royal Graveyard

A significant political controversy has erupted in Bhopal regarding the proposed underground section of the Bhopal Metro's Orange Line Phase-2. Congress MLA Atif Aqeel has raised strong objections to the metro line passing beneath the Shahi Qabristan, a historic royal graveyard located near Bhopal Talkies. The MLA emphasized that the metro project must not disturb the sanctity of the cemetery, calling for utmost respect for those interred there.

Legal and Administrative Developments in the Dispute

The Shahi Waqf Board has taken legal action by filing a petition in court, which has resulted in a court-imposed stay on the project in this segment. Authorities are now urging resolution through constructive dialogue and negotiations. In response, a joint inspection was recently conducted involving Metro officials, representatives from the Shahi Waqf Board, and various public figures to assess the situation firsthand.

BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya has provided assurances, stating that the underground construction work will be carried out with precision to ensure no damage occurs to the graves. He highlighted the importance of balancing infrastructure development with cultural and religious sensitivities.

Technical Details of the Bhopal Metro Orange Line

The Orange Line of the Bhopal Metro spans a total length of 16.74 kilometers. This route includes 5.38 kilometers of elevated tracks and 3.39 kilometers of underground sections. Overall, eight stations are planned along this line to enhance urban connectivity. The current dispute specifically concerns the underground portion that is proposed to run beneath the Shahi Qabristan, adding a layer of complexity to the project's execution.

Key stakeholders, including political leaders and community representatives, are now engaged in discussions to find a mutually acceptable solution. The outcome of these talks will be crucial for the timely progression of the metro project while honoring local heritage and sentiments.
