Bengal Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Arms and Cash Ahead of Polls

In a significant pre-election security sweep, law enforcement agencies across West Bengal have dramatically escalated their operations against the illicit movement of arms and unaccounted cash. This intensified crackdown has yielded a series of major seizures in key urban centers, including Kolkata and Durgapur, highlighting the authorities' commitment to maintaining electoral integrity.

Major Arms Trafficking Bust in Kolkata

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police executed a critical arrest on Saturday near the Rajabazar Science College, under the jurisdiction of the Amherst Street police station. The operation led to the apprehension of an alleged arms trafficker, identified as Sohail Akhtar, a 43-year-old resident of Nalanda in Bihar.

During the detention, authorities recovered a substantial cache of illegal weaponry, including six country-made single-shot firearms and fourteen pieces of 8mm cartridges. Akhtar failed to provide any satisfactory explanation for possessing these items, leading to his formal arrest at 1:05 PM.

Additional Commissioner of Police Solomon V Nesakumar confirmed that a case has been registered at the STF police station. The charges have been filed under the stringent provisions of the Arms Act and relevant sections of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, underscoring the seriousness of the offense.

Surge in Cash Seizures Across the City

Concurrently, Kolkata has experienced a notable spike in the interception of unaccounted cash over the last 48 hours, as Static Surveillance Teams (SST) have tightened their vigilance across the metropolis.

In a significant operation within the Ballygunge constituency, an SST unit intercepted a vehicle at the intersection of Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue and Gurusaday Dutta Road on Saturday. The search revealed an astonishing Rs 25 lakh in unaccounted cash. Officials from the Income Tax Department were immediately summoned to take over the investigation, and the driver of the car was detained for further questioning.

In a separate but equally crucial incident, another SST team conducted a naka checking at Topsia More, where they intercepted an individual and seized Rs 2 lakh in unaccounted cash. The cash has been officially confiscated, and necessary legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused, who remains in custody.

Durgapur Railway Station Sees Massive Cash Haul

The enforcement drive extended beyond Kolkata's city limits, reaching Durgapur where the Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully thwarted a major smuggling attempt. On Friday afternoon, GRP officers arrested two individuals, Tapan Kumar Mitra and Guddu Kumar Roy, both hailing from Bihar, at Durgapur railway station.

The duo had arrived via the Patna-Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express and were reportedly planning to travel to Kolkata by bus. Upon conducting a thorough search of their luggage, police discovered an enormous quantity of currency notes.

To verify the exact amount, employees from a public sector bank were called in with counting machines. The total was meticulously tallied at Rs 49,99,500. Both accused were promptly arrested and produced before the Asansol District Court on Saturday, marking a significant victory in the ongoing crackdown against electoral malpractices.

These coordinated operations demonstrate a robust and multi-faceted approach by Bengal's law enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities that could potentially influence the upcoming electoral process. The seizures of both arms and substantial cash amounts send a clear message about the state's preparedness to ensure a free and fair election environment.
