Family Political Rivalry Intensifies in Bagdah Constituency
The Bagdah assembly constituency in West Bengal is set to witness a dramatic family political showdown on April 29, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially named Soma Thakur as its candidate. Soma Thakur, who is the wife of Union Minister and Bongaon MP Shantanu Thakur, will directly challenge her sister-in-law Madhuparna Thakur, the sitting Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Bagdah and daughter of Rajya Sabha member Mamata Bala Thakur.
Historical Context of Thakur Family Political Battles
This is not the first instance where members of the influential Thakurbari family, which holds significant sway in the Matua spiritual community, have been pitted against each other in electoral contests. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shantanu Thakur and Mamata Bala Thakur competed for the Bongaon parliamentary seat, creating a similar familial political divide.
Adding to the family's political footprint, another member of the clan, Subrata Thakur, who is Shantanu's brother and a current MLA, will once again seek re-election from the neighboring Gaighata constituency. This demonstrates the extensive political network and influence the Thakur family maintains across multiple constituencies in the region.
Bagdah's Volatile Political History
Bagdah has consistently been a hotspot for intense political competition and dramatic shifts in allegiance. During the 2021 assembly elections, BJP candidate Biswajit Das secured a decisive victory in Bagdah by a substantial margin. However, in a surprising turn of events, Das later defected to the Trinamool Congress, highlighting the fluid nature of political loyalties in the constituency.
Following his switch, Das contested the subsequent Lok Sabha elections but was unsuccessful. The TMC then nominated Madhuparna Thakur in the bypolls that followed, and the party has once again placed its confidence in the 26-year-old MLA, who has already commenced an active campaign across the constituency.
Soma Thakur's Political Entry and Internal Challenges
Soma Thakur, while not previously holding formal political positions, has been involved in election campaigning, particularly supporting her husband during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. She currently serves as the head of the Matua Mahila wing, giving her organizational experience within the community framework.
However, her nomination has reportedly sparked discontent among certain sections of BJP workers. According to a party source, several disgruntled workers have even issued warnings about potential protests during the election period. Despite these internal challenges, Soma Thakur remains confident about her prospects.
"I actively campaigned in 2019, and this contest feels like a natural progression," she stated. Addressing concerns within the Matua community regarding alleged exclusion from electoral rolls, Soma Thakur characterized the issue as temporary, assuring that it would be resolved promptly.
"The people of Bagdah are eagerly waiting to cast their votes. Everyone is looking forward with great anticipation to May 4, as this time the lotus will surely bloom in Bengal. People of Bagdah will stand by me, and I will stand by them," she declared optimistically.
Madhuparna Thakur's Grassroots Strategy
On the opposing side, Madhuparna Thakur is leveraging her established grassroots connections and her image as a "daughter of the soil" who understands local issues intimately. She expressed absolute confidence in her re-election bid, citing her previous electoral performance as evidence of her popularity.
"I am 100% confident of my victory. I won the bypoll by over 33,000 votes. This time, the margin will exceed 40,000," she predicted boldly.
When questioned about facing a family member in the electoral arena, Madhuparna maintained a respectful stance toward her elders while focusing on her campaign. "I do not concern myself with my electoral opponent. I have respect and regard for all family elders. Ahead of last year's bypoll, I had sought blessings of all my elders. I will do so this time too," she added diplomatically.
Her mother, Mamata Bala Thakur, echoed this confidence, stating, "People of Bagdah have embraced Madhuparna," emphasizing the MLA's acceptance among constituents.
Matua Community's Electoral Significance
The Matua community remains a crucial voting bloc in Bagdah, with their support often determining electoral outcomes. Recent concerns have emerged regarding voter list discrepancies, with reports indicating that over 15,000 names were excluded from the first final voter list under the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative, while another 14,000-plus names remain under scrutiny.
This issue of potential voter exclusion could significantly impact the election dynamics, particularly given the Matua community's substantial presence in the constituency. Both candidates are likely to address these concerns extensively during their campaigns, as securing the Matua vote could prove decisive in this closely watched family political contest.
