Assamese Youth and Women's Forums Stage Protest in Dibrugarh Over Key Demands

Members of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha and Asomiya Mahila Mancha organized a significant demonstration at the bustling Chowkidingee Chariali intersection in Dibrugarh on Friday. The protestors voiced a series of pressing demands, highlighting issues critical to the region's social and economic fabric.

Core Demands of the Protesters

The demonstrators carried banners and raised slogans to emphasize their key concerns:

  • Expedited Justice for Zubeen Garg: Calling for faster legal proceedings in the death case of the renowned singer.
  • Implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP): Urging the introduction of ILP across Assam to regulate entry and protect indigenous rights.
  • Deportation of Illegal Immigrants: Demanding strict enforcement of the Assam Accord to address illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
  • Control of Rising Prices: Seeking government measures to curb the increasing costs of essential commodities like rice, vegetables, and fuel.

Voices from the Protest

Ranu Tamuli, secretary of Asomiya Mahila Mancha, expressed frustration over the delay in the Zubeen Garg case. "The Chief Minister had earlier assured justice for Zubeen da, but now states it is up to the judiciary. We support the courts, but proceedings must be expedited. Over six months have passed since the incident, and justice must be delivered soon," she stated. Tamuli highlighted the timing, noting that with the Prime Minister visiting Assam and the Union Home Minister expected soon, she urged the CM to push for a quicker resolution before the assembly polls, even proposing a fast-track court for the matter.

A leader from Asomiya Yuva Mancha added, "We demand that the CM ensure justice for Zubeen, implement Inner Line Permit statewide, and address the surge in prices of essential items. The BJP government has been in power for nearly a decade, yet the implementation of ILP remains pending." He also raised concerns about illegal immigration, calling for rigorous enforcement of the Assam Accord.

Criticism and Broader Implications

The protestors criticized the government for its inaction despite repeated representations. They linked their demands to broader themes of protecting Assamese culture, safeguarding indigenous rights, and ensuring economic stability in the region. The demonstration underscored growing discontent over unresolved issues that impact daily life and regional identity.

The protest at Chowkidingee Chariali served as a powerful reminder of the community's expectations from authorities, emphasizing the need for timely action on justice, security, and economic concerns in Assam.
