Assam Implements Stringent Security Measures for Upcoming Elections
In a major move to ensure free and fair elections, the state of Assam is implementing comprehensive security protocols. The international borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan will be sealed a full 72 hours before polling commences. This decisive action aims to prevent any external interference or illegal cross-border movement that could influence the electoral process.
Massive Police and CAPF Deployment Across the State
Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh, serving as the nodal security officer for the elections, has confirmed an extensive security apparatus. Over 74,000 Assam police personnel of various ranks will be actively engaged during the poll period. Additionally, 200 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have already arrived in the state, with more units scheduled to join them shortly to bolster security further.
Rigorous Border Monitoring and Surveillance Systems
Security measures have been significantly intensified at both inter-state and inter-district borders. Assam shares its boundaries with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Nagaland. To monitor these areas effectively, authorities have established 134 inter-state border checkposts. Special nakas (checkpoints) are being set up, particularly in sensitive zones, to scrutinize all incoming and outgoing traffic.
IGP Singh emphasized that inter-state and inter-district border monitoring has been ramped up considerably. Extensive CCTV coverage has been installed at most vital points to ensure all checking procedures are meticulously recorded, creating a transparent and accountable surveillance system.
Active Area Domination and Confidence-Building Initiatives
The security strategy includes proactive area domination and confidence-building measures conducted by various security agencies. The primary objective is to ensure that no intimidation of voters takes place, thereby safeguarding the democratic rights of every citizen. IGP Singh stated that these efforts are crucial for maintaining a peaceful and secure environment conducive to free voting.
Combatting Illicit Items and Regulating Arms
A key focus of the security plan is to curb the flow of illicit items that could disrupt the electoral process. Special attention is being given to preventing the illegal transportation of liquor and other materials that might be used to influence voters. In a related move, instructions have been issued directing all licensed arms holders to deposit their weapons with the authorities for the duration of the election period, minimizing the risk of violence.
Deployment of Flying Squads and Static Surveillance Teams
Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel outlined the operational framework for on-ground surveillance. Each constituency will be equipped with nine Flying Squad Teams (FST) and nine Static Surveillance Teams (SST). These teams will operate round-the-clock to monitor and respond to any suspicious activities. Each FST and SST will comprise a mix of civil and police officers, accompanied by a videographer to document all actions and ensure procedural integrity.
International Border Security Protocols
Regarding the international boundaries, IGP Singh clarified that these are primarily guarded by dedicated security agencies. The sealing of borders and adherence to all requisite election guidelines will be strictly followed as per the established norms. This coordinated approach ensures that both domestic and international borders are secured effectively, leaving no loopholes for potential electoral malpractices.
The combined efforts of the Assam Police, CAPF, and election authorities demonstrate a robust commitment to conducting a transparent, secure, and impartial election. With these multi-layered security measures in place, the state aims to uphold the sanctity of the democratic process and ensure that every vote is cast without fear or favor.
