Annamalai Opts Out of Tamil Nadu Polls, to Campaign for NDA

Former Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai Clarifies Voluntary Decision to Skip Assembly Elections

In a significant development ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, former state BJP president K Annamalai has publicly stated that he voluntarily opted out of contesting from any constituency. The clarification comes amidst media speculation and internal party discussions regarding his absence from the candidate list.

Annamalai's Official Statement and Campaign Focus

"I had already informed the core committee in writing that I would not contest from any constituency," Annamalai emphasized during his campaign activities in Kannur, Kerala. "So, it is not that I was denied a ticket; the truth is that I decided not to contest." He expressed gratitude toward the BJP leadership for respecting his decision and providing him with the opportunity to campaign extensively in support of NDA alliance candidates across the state.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who released the party's candidate list, corroborated Annamalai's position, stating that the former state chief had chosen to focus on statewide campaigning rather than contesting from a single constituency. "Annamalai is a dedicated worker of the party and has chosen to work across the state rather than contest from one constituency," Goyal explained, adding that candidate selection was based on inputs from the state unit and individual preferences.

Internal Party Reactions and Strategic Considerations

Within BJP circles, Annamalai's absence from the ballot has sparked considerable debate. A senior party leader noted that Annamalai had demonstrated strong mobilisation capabilities, drawing large crowds at rallies addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Madurai and Madurantakam, and enjoying substantial support among younger voters. "His absence from the ballot could affect mobilisation and give opposition parties space to question internal decisions linked to the alliance," the leader cautioned.

However, other senior leaders emphasized that the decision was part of a broader electoral strategy. "The party is not centred on one individual. The leadership decides alliances and candidate selection based on long-term strategy," another senior leader stated, highlighting the calculated approach to the upcoming polls.

Annamalai's Evolving Role and Party Dynamics

Annamalai's reduced formal role within the party has been observed over the past year. Key developments include:

  • He was replaced as state president following the renewal of ties between BJP and AIADMK under a deal negotiated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami in April 2025.
  • He was excluded from seat-sharing talks and key decision-making teams.
  • In February 2026, he was appointed poll in-charge for six seats but later stepped back from formal roles citing personal reasons, while continuing background campaign work in parts of Coimbatore that were eventually not allotted to the BJP.

Notably, leaders perceived as close to Annamalai, including Amarprasad Reddy and SG Suryah, were also not fielded as candidates, indicating broader strategic adjustments within the party structure.

High-Profile Support and Campaign Optimism

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya offered strong endorsement of Annamalai's campaign capabilities, describing him as the party's "most popular leader" with a substantial following across Tamil Nadu and nationally. "He has been given the responsibility of campaigning for all the candidates in Tamil Nadu. Even today, he is in Kerala where he enjoys a great following. He is also campaigning in Puducherry, where people are crazy about him," Surya remarked.

Expressing confidence in the electoral impact, Surya added, "I am extremely confident that Annamalai's popularity and his campaign all across Tamil Nadu will translate into victory for the BJP candidates all across the state."

BJP's Candidate Lineup and Electoral Strategy

The BJP has fielded several prominent candidates in key constituencies, including:

Annamalai has actively taken to social media to reinforce his campaign commitment, posting on platform X: "I am a karyakarta and will stand shoulder to shoulder & campaign for all our winning BJP & other NDA candidates, with the aim of the NDA winning 210 seats." His statement underscores the strategic shift from individual candidacy to broader alliance mobilisation as the BJP positions itself for the upcoming electoral battle in Tamil Nadu.
