Visakhapatnam's Anandapuram Junction Grapples with Intense Traffic Congestion
The bustling Anandapuram junction, located approximately 25 kilometres from Visakhapatnam, has emerged as a critical traffic bottleneck, causing significant delays for commuters daily. This key intersection serves as a major access point, connecting Visakhapatnam with the districts of Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and Anakapalli, leading to consistently high vehicular volumes and prolonged gridlock.
Root Causes of the Traffic Snarls
The congestion at Anandapuram junction stems from multiple factors. Primarily, the convergence of several highways, including the Chennai-Kolkata national highway, results in heavy traffic flow, especially during peak hours from early morning to late evening. Compounding this issue is the presence of a flower and vegetable market at the junction, which further impedes movement and exacerbates delays for motorists.
Proposed Solutions to Alleviate Congestion
In response to the escalating traffic crisis, officials have outlined a comprehensive plan involving both immediate and long-term measures. The core strategy focuses on constructing a 400-metre flyover with extended approach roads and additional service lanes, allowing vehicles to bypass the junction entirely. This flyover is particularly crucial for traffic moving towards Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts from Vizag city, addressing a longstanding gap in infrastructure.
Additionally, authorities plan to implement road widening on all sides of the junction, which will involve partial utilisation of land from the existing flower and vegetable market. A full-fledged rotary or roundabout will also be constructed to streamline traffic flow. Expansion of service roads, such as from the old Gram Panchayat office towards Tagarapuvalasa, is part of the plan, though it may require acquisition of some private properties.
Government Initiatives and Market Relocation
Bheemili MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao has confirmed that the state government is taking concrete steps towards a permanent solution. Following a recent site visit with district officials, he announced that administrative approval has been granted for the proposed flyover, with an expected completion timeline of two years. To prevent future bottlenecks, plans are underway to consolidate nearby land parcels to develop a modern flower market, vegetable market, spacious parking facilities, and cold storage infrastructure.
As an interim measure, discussions are ongoing to relocate the flower market to a 95-cent site nearby, originally designated for a Rythu Bazaar. The possibility of utilising adjacent land belonging to the SC Corporation is also under consideration. These efforts aim to reduce traffic pressure and facilitate smoother operations at the junction.
Future Outlook and Traffic Projections
With traffic volumes anticipated to rise further once the Bhogapuram airport becomes operational, the urgency for these infrastructure upgrades has intensified. The proposed flyover and associated improvements are designed to accommodate this growth and provide a sustainable solution to the congestion. Officials emphasise that these measures will not only ease current traffic woes but also enhance connectivity and economic activity in the region.
