In the bustling Alandur constituency of Chennai, a high-stakes electoral contest is unfolding as DMK MLA and MSME minister T M Anbarasan seeks a third consecutive victory. This win would solidify Alandur, historically a swing seat between DMK and AIADMK, into a DMK stronghold, reshaping the political landscape of the region.
Geographic and Socioeconomic Divide
The constituency is sharply divided by the GST Road, creating a tale of two halves. On one side lie relatively well-developed neighborhoods such as Nanganallur, Palavanthangal, and Adambakkam, characterized by modern amenities and urban comforts. On the other side, areas like Moulivakkam, Mugalivakkam, and Iyyapanthangal, which were once village panchayats, continue to grapple with significant infrastructure gaps despite rapid urbanization. This contrast is evident in the landscape, dotted with large apartment complexes and gated communities interspersed with underdeveloped pockets, highlighting the uneven progress in the region.

"A visit by our leader to Alandur could change things," Vembuli asserts, emphasizing their readiness to challenge established parties.

Ground-level sentiments reveal a nuanced picture, with voters torn between continuity and change. N Vignesh, an auto driver from Adambakkam, expresses growing impatience: "No matter how much good this government has done, there is a desire for a different way of governance. People like me want to see fresh faces in the assembly." He notes that younger voters lean towards change, while older demographics may prefer familiar faces.
Srikumar, a two-wheeler mechanic from Nanganallur, predicts that as polling day approaches, the contest could narrow into a traditional DMK-AIADMK battle, citing their cadre strength and campaign machinery. "Their organizational power tends to dominate in the final stretch," he observes.
Governance and Unresolved Issues
From a governance perspective, residents acknowledge improvements in infrastructure under Anbarasan's tenure. However, key issues remain unresolved. 'Citizen' Senthil, a civic activist from Iyyapanthangal, points out: "Critical problems like the underground drainage system have been promised for over two decades but are still pending, causing frustration among locals."
As Alandur heads to the polls, the electorate is carefully weighing the benefits of continuity against the appeal of change, with the outcome poised to influence broader political trends in Tamil Nadu.
