Assam Jatiya Parishad Unveils Comprehensive Governance Roadmap for Assembly Elections
In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming assembly polls, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), a crucial ally within the Congress-led opposition alliance, has officially released its detailed election manifesto. The document presents an expansive governance roadmap that addresses critical issues ranging from border security to economic revival, with party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi leading the charge.
Core Promises: Assam Accord, Border Security, and Transparent NRC
The manifesto makes several bold commitments regarding Assam's identity and security. The AJP has pledged to ensure the full implementation of every clause of the Assam Accord, a longstanding demand in the state. Furthermore, the party vows to exert pressure on the central government to completely repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) from Assam, arguing it contradicts the Accord's spirit.
On matters of national security and demographic integrity, the AJP promises a complete sealing of the India-Bangladesh border to prevent unauthorized crossings. The party also commits to preparing a foreigner-free voter list and conducting a review of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with absolute transparency, aiming to address widespread concerns about the process.
Economic Revival and Sectoral Development
The AJP's economic vision is multifaceted, targeting revival through several key sectors:
- Agriculture: Providing legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and achieving 100% irrigation coverage for agricultural land.
- Industry: Focusing on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the traditional tea and textiles industries, and promoting cooperatives.
- Infrastructure: Building robust infrastructure to support economic growth and connectivity.
The manifesto also emphasizes fiscal reforms and securing land rights as foundational elements for sustainable development.
Social Welfare, Governance, and Cultural Promises
Beyond economics, the AJP outlines a comprehensive social agenda:
- Public Services: Improving healthcare facilities, enhancing the education system, and generating employment opportunities.
- Women's Safety: Establishing a dedicated 'Women’s Safety Force' to protect women and ensure their security.
- Governance Reform: Making the police department free from political interference and ensuring an inclusive, accountable administration.
- Environmental Protection: Implementing flood mitigation strategies and promoting green growth initiatives.
In the cultural sphere, the party has made specific pledges to honor Assamese heritage. This includes establishing a film city named after renowned singer Zubeen Garg, providing state grants for Assamese film production, and constructing 'Mini Cinema Halls' with 100 seats in rural areas to boost local cinema. The manifesto also promises protection for Assam's land, language, and culture, alongside development in sports.
Leadership and Accountability
Party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who will contest the election from the Khowang constituency in Dibrugarh district against BJP's Chakradhar Gogoi, emphasized the party's commitment to accountability. "We promise to do what we say. We will make no compromise in protecting Assam's land, language, and culture," Gogoi stated. He further asserted that the AJP views power as a tool for public service and vows to remain answerable to the people.
The release of this detailed manifesto positions the AJP as a significant player in Assam's political landscape, offering voters a clear alternative vision focused on identity, security, economic revival, and holistic development for the state's future progress.
