AIMIM Throws Weight Behind RJD Candidate in Bihar Rajya Sabha Contest

In a significant political development in Patna, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced its support for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Amarendra Dhari Singh in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. With five MLAs in the Bihar legislative assembly, AIMIM's backing positions Singh favorably to secure the mandatory 41 votes needed for victory in the poll scheduled for Monday.

Opposition Unity Strengthens Ahead of Crucial Vote

The opposition camp has been actively consolidating support ahead of the election. RJD working president Tejashwi Prasad Yadav attended an Iftaar hosted by AIMIM state president and MLA Akhtarul Iman on Sunday, where Singh and other key figures were present. This gathering underscored the growing coordination among opposition parties to present a united front against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"We have requested support from AIMIM for our candidate," Tejashwi Yadav told reporters after the event. "It is my firm belief that all secular forces will defeat the BJP."

Vote Calculations and Political Maneuvering

In theory, Singh's candidacy relies on support from multiple opposition factions:

  • 25 RJD MLAs
  • 6 Congress MLAs
  • 3 Left party MLAs
  • 1 BSP MLA
  • 5 AIMIM MLAs
  • 1 Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) MLA I P Gupta

IP MLA I P Gupta expressed confidence in the opposition's position, stating, "The RJD candidate requires 41 votes for his win, but the RJD will get 45, and even 50 votes." Gupta hinted at possible dissatisfaction within the LJP (Ram Vilas) led by Union Minister Chirag Paswan and even within the JD(U), suggesting concerns that the BJP might secure a chief minister position if Nitish Kumar moves to the Rajya Sabha.

AIMIM's Strategic Decision

AIMIM MLA Mohamad Tausif Alam clarified his party's position, emphasizing their commitment to defeating the BJP. "The AIMIM MLAs will participate in the Rajya Sabha election to defeat the BJP," Alam stated. "We will vote as per the 'firman' of our party leader Asaduddin Owaisi Saheb. We will vote for the RJD candidate, and it will be to defeat the BJP."

Alam acknowledged that his party would have preferred the RJD to field a Muslim candidate but recognized their limited influence with only five MLAs. "Ours is a weak party with only five MLAs. Therefore, we will support the RJD candidate to defeat the BJP," he explained.

Logistical Preparations and Speculation

In preparation for the election, all 25 RJD MLAs were staying at a hotel in Patna on Sunday, while AIMIM MLAs were seen moving between hotels, including visits to where RJD legislators were lodged. Akhtarul Iman confirmed his invitation to Tejashwi Yadav for the Iftaar, noting that "posters have been put up is quite natural" in reference to campaign materials.

Meanwhile, speculation about possible cross-voting by some Congress MLAs surfaced during the day. However, the state Congress dismissed these claims. Party spokesman Rajesh Rathorre asserted, "Our party MLAs will vote for the INDIA bloc candidate on Monday," adding that all six MLAs were in Patna attending internal party meetings while remaining in touch with the RJD.

Broader Political Context

The Rajya Sabha election in Bihar represents a critical test for opposition unity ahead of future electoral battles. With RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha also in the fray as part of the NDA, the contest highlights the ongoing political realignments in the state. The opposition's coordinated efforts, including AIMIM's strategic support for the RJD candidate, demonstrate their determination to challenge the ruling coalition's dominance in upper house representation.

As voting approaches, all eyes remain on whether the opposition can maintain discipline and secure the necessary votes for Singh's election, potentially marking a significant victory for the INDIA bloc in Bihar's complex political landscape.
