AIADMK Leader Edappadi K Palaniswami Dismisses Vijay's TVK, Labels Tamil Nadu Election a Bipolar Fight

In a comprehensive interview with journalist Julie Mariappan, AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has emphatically dismissed the electoral significance of actor Vijay's newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Palaniswami characterized the upcoming 2026 state assembly election as a direct, bipolar contest between his party and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Direct Confrontation Between AIADMK and DMK

Palaniswami expressed unwavering confidence in AIADMK's prospects, framing the political battle as one between "DMK, an evil force" and "pure people." He positioned AIADMK as "the commander of the people’s army" destined for triumph, asserting that "true democracy will flourish under AIADMK." The leader directly challenged DMK's governance record, accusing its leaders of prioritizing their family's interests over public welfare.

Countering DMK's Allegations and Campaign Strategy

The AIADMK chief addressed multiple criticisms from the DMK camp. He dismissed DMK branding the NDA as a "No Development Alliance" as "babble of the immature." Regarding Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's accusation that Palaniswami lacked courage to speak against the BJP on the delimitation bill, he cited Union Home Minister Amit Shah's parliamentary assurance that Tamil Nadu would not be harmed. Palaniswami argued that supporting the bill could have increased Tamil Nadu's parliamentary representation from 7.18% to 7.23%.

He characterized the DMK's 2026 campaign strategy as "Tamil Nadu vs Delhi," suggesting Stalin resorts to "scare tactics about BJP" due to a lack of administrative achievements. Palaniswami warned that by fostering religious polarization to consolidate minority votes, Stalin risks ending up like 'aapasaitha kurangu' – a reference to a Tamil fable about a monkey causing its own downfall.

Defending AIADMK's Legacy and Alliance Decisions

On economic matters, Palaniswami credited the "foundation laid during AIADMK govt’s 10-year rule" for driving Tamil Nadu's current 11.19% growth. He questioned how much of the DMK government's borrowed money has been spent on capital expenditure despite revenue more than doubling.

The AIADMK leader dismissed the DMK's coalition of 21 parties as an assembly of entities that have "lost the people’s trust and support." He defended his party's alliance with AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran as a move to "consolidate votes against DMK," while explaining that former allies O. Panneerselvam and V.K. Sasikala were not reinducted due to expulsion and alignment with other parties respectively.

Addressing Minority Concerns and Centre-State Relations

Palaniswami addressed questions about AIADMK's appeal to minority communities regarding its positions on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Triple Talaq Bill, and FRCA Bill. He maintained that CAA would have "no adverse effect on Indian Muslims" and noted Muslim women's welcome of triple talaq legislation. Regarding the FRCA Bill, he called it a Union government policy decision whose public impact is yet to be assessed.

On allegations of AIADMK being subservient to the BJP, Palaniswami contrasted his party's record with DMK's, claiming DMK leaders "prioritized their family’s interests" while sharing power in Union governments since 1999. He listed unresolved issues including Cauvery, Mullaperiyar, Katchatheevu, NEET, and the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils as DMK failures.

Palaniswami highlighted AIADMK's achievements in maintaining "harmonious relationship with Centre" while resolving the Cauvery issue, protecting government school students' medical admissions, and declaring the delta region a protected agricultural zone.

Personal Attacks and Freebie Promises

When questioned about personal attacks against DMK leaders Stalin, Udhayanidhi, and Kanimozhi, Palaniswami described his comments as "reactions" to offensive and vulgar remarks made about him since 2017. He suggested DMK leaders were "unable to accept that an ordinary farmer could rise to a high position."

Regarding AIADMK's own freebie promises, Palaniswami differentiated them as provisions of "certain goods free of cost to poor and middle-income families who use them in their daily lives but cannot afford them," while asserting his party's ability to "keep public debt under control."

Final Assessment of Political Landscape

Palaniswami dismissed former CM O. Panneerselvam's prediction that AIADMK may not survive the election, comparing it to DMK's own recovery after electoral setbacks. On Vijay's TVK, he maintained that "no one approached us" regarding an alliance and declined to predict the actor's electoral prospects, stating "I am not an astrologer."

The AIADMK leader expressed confidence that internal issues within ally PMK would not adversely impact their alliance's victory, contrasting his approach with DMK's tendency to interfere in others' affairs.
