16 Injured in Fire at Jejuri Gadh, Pune; Police Investigate

A celebratory gathering at a revered pilgrimage site in Pune district took a dangerous turn on Sunday, leaving at least sixteen individuals with burn injuries. The incident occurred at the foothills of the Jejuri Gadh Tirthkshetra, a popular holy site.

Victory Celebration Turns Chaotic

The group, which included workers from a political party and two newly elected members of the Jejuri Municipal Council, had visited the site to offer prayers following their electoral success. The visit was part of their post-victory rituals on Sunday afternoon.

Turmeric and Firecrackers Suspected in Blaze

According to officials from the Pune Rural Police, the rituals involved the use of Bhandara, or turmeric. An officer stated that the workers used the turmeric and also set off firecrackers as part of the ceremonies. This combination is believed to have triggered a minor explosion, which quickly led to a fire spreading at the foothills of the Gadh.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajendrasingh Gaud of the Bhor division confirmed the details to the press. He reported that all sixteen injured persons sustained minor burns, with most of the injuries localized to their hands. After the fire broke out around 3 pm on Sunday, the injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Investigation Underway, All Victims Discharged

Fortunately, all those affected received preliminary treatment and were later discharged from the hospital. The police have launched an investigation to determine the precise sequence of events. DSP Gaud indicated that the probe will focus on whether the fire was caused by the bursting of firecrackers or by the use of contaminated turmeric during the rituals.

This incident highlights the potential hazards associated with certain traditional practices during large gatherings, especially when combined with flammable materials. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols for such events at the popular tirthkshetra to prevent similar accidents in the future.
